Being Community updates

Voluntary COVID-19 Vaccination Program
On May 25, 2021, the COVID Response Team (CRT) and Cabinet announced a path for Luther College to move to Alert Level 0: Blue (Normal) and resume classes, residential living, and operations of administrative offices without mandates for face masks and physical distancing. Read the full announcement to learn more.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Fiscal year ended May 31

The college's fiscal year ended May 31. The Office for Financial Services reminds all faculty and staff that supplies, materials, etc., must have been received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 20-21 budget. Additionally, all outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices-no faxed copies, supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by June 11 to be included in FY 20-21 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Call with questions and as always, thank you for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

Nordic Brew summer specials

Nordic Brew is serving up daily hot lunch specials all summer long. Monday: Buy a BBQ Sandwich and get a cold brew for only $2. Tuesday: Look for the Chef's Choice Hot Lunch Entree! Wednesday: Buy a Burger of the Day and get a shake for only $2. Thursday: Buy the Hot Lunch Special and try a hot or iced chai for only $2. Friday: Buy the Hot Lunch Special and get a double ice cream cone for only $2!

Cafeteria hours starting June 1

Monday-Friday: Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Dinner 5-6:30 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday: Breakfast 7:30-9 a.m.; Lunch 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Dinner 5-6:30 p.m.

Phone system survey

The Board of Regents has approved the purchase of a new phone system to replace the current 20+ year old system. ITS is collecting data through a Phone System Survey to determine the type of licensing to purchase for each user. Staff and faculty answers to the survey will help ITS select the most cost-effective licensing option. If you have multiple office phones, please submit one survey for each phone that you use or that your work study students use. Please complete the survey by Thursday, June 3.

2021 Virtual Dorian Summer Music Camp is open for enrollments!

This summer, we are thrilled to bring the music, memories, and friendships of Dorian Summer Music Camps to music students, regardless of where they are located! From June 15-17, our 2021 Virtual Dorian Summer Music Camp will offer a few hours of exciting and interactive programming applicable to any musician entering grades 7-12 and 2021 high school graduates. Along with the virtual programming, a Dorian camp box will also be sent to students' homes, with $50 of Dorian contents, including some limited edition items. Get outside summer wellness challenge

Email Wellness <wellness> to join the summer employee wellness challenge or learn more. The challenge is to be active outside each week for 150 minutes for 10 weeks, starting June 6. Plus, bonus wellness activities to take breaks from technology, connect to others, and strength train lead to more prize drawings!

Retirement

A retirement celebration honoring Amy Wrightsman will be 2:30–4 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, in the Nobel Room of the Dahl Centennial Union. Please join us in wishing Amy well after nearly 20 years of dedicated service.

The Dean's Office invites all for ice cream treats outdoors on Bentdahl Commons 2:30-4 p.m. Monday, June 7, to greet Kevin Kraus and wish him well on his retirement. Please respect Covid protocols (masking, distancing, no handshaking, etc.). Rain location will be under the CFL Canopy.

Position openings

Custodial Support Coordinator (1.0 FTE): Position responsible for providing excellent customer service while evaluating and assigning float staff to areas of campus and supervising custodial staff. Coordinator will work with Assistant Director of Facilities to manage custodial operations and act as back-up to Custodial Student Work Coordinator. High School diploma, computer skills and valid driver's license is required. Five years' supervisor experience and an interest in environmental sustainability preferred.

Information Security Analyst and Systems Administrator (1.0 FTE): Position will lead the work of identifying IT related security risks, and the prioritization and coordination of risk resolution (50%); and support operating systems and network infrastructure needs, services, backups, and maintenance procedures (50%). Bachelor's or associate's degree is required with preference for IT related-field along with experience installing and maintaining Windows and Linux server operating systems. Desirable experience includes working knowledge of Active Directory, Azure ADFS, Windows Group Policy, and enterprise backup systems. Additional preference is given to those with Information Security knowledge and experience.

Manager of Student Accounts (1.0 FTE): Position to oversee the operations of student financial services including but not limited to billing, receivables, and cashiering function of the college. The manager will maintain the integrity and timeliness of student account charges, credits, adjustments, refunds, and online payment systems. Bachelor's degree in accounting or a business-related field, at least two years' relevant experience in collections and/or customer service, and strong Excel skills are required. Experience in higher education and financial aid guidelines is preferred.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Rodolfo Nieto '04 has created nine original songs that express universal experiences from an American-Latinx perspective. In collaboration with OOPS MN, and accompanied by Victoria Vargas, Jared Miller, and Mauricio Sanchez, these songs will be performed and recorded at the Ritz Theater in Northeast Minneapolis and will premiere to the public on Saturday, June 12, at 7 p.m. CT on Rodolfo’s YouTube Channel.

David Bishop, Courtney Cooper '21, and Carina Hansen '21 presented "A confirmatory factor analysis of the Attachment to Material Objects Scale" at the Association for Psychological Science 2021 conference.

Gereon Kopf contributed a review of Evan Thompson's "Why I am not a Buddhist" to the "Pacific World."

Methembe Moyo '22 has been awarded the Davis Projects for Peace grant for his proposal named "Lift As You Rise." In Zimbabwe, students must pass an end-of-the-year exam before they can obtain their high school diploma. According to Moyo, 61% of 16 to 18-year-old students in rural Zimbabwe drop out of school upon failing their national examinations. Moyo wants to close that gap by providing rural students with textbooks, spaces to study, funds for exam fees, and tutors. Read how he plans to make the program self-sustaining.

• June 5 is World Environment Day—a day meant to raise environmental awareness across the globe.
• June 6 is National Yo-Yo Day.
• June 14 is Flag Day (U.S.). Be sure to raise the flag! Learn about the U.S. Flag Code, which provides guidelines for displaying the American flag properly.
• June 19 is Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day). On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation aloud in Galveston, Texas, effectively liberating slaves in the state, which had thus far been beyond control of the Union Army.
• June 20 is the summer solstice, which heralds the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. It's the day with the most hours of daylight, so enjoy! In the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins at this time.
• June 20 is also Father's Day this year.
• June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day (Canada). This holiday is meant to remind Canadians of the contributions of the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.
• June 21 is Go Skateboarding Day.
• June 24 brings Midsummer Day, traditionally the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvesting.
• June 30 is Asteroid Day.
