Tuition Benefit Program deadline moved up to Oct. 1

Luther is pleased to offer faculty and staff a benefit that is highly unique in today's workplace: higher education for one's dependents. The Tuition Benefit Program has a three-step application process available online. Please note, due to earlier application deadlines at many participating colleges, we have adjusted our deadlines accordingly to better correspond with the earlier dates.

Deadlines are as follows:

Oct. 1: Applications due
Nov. 1: Finalized list of colleges due
May 15: Confirmation form due

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

HR update

On May 20, 2021, President Ward's email reported that the Board of Regents approved the restoration of the 5% institutional retirement contribution for faculty and staff, effective June 1, 2021.  Employees paid bi-weekly should see the 5% employer contribution reflected in their June 9 paycheck. Employees paid monthly should see the 5% employer contribution reflected in their June 25 paycheck.

Parking restriction June 7-18

In order to allow for the safe drop off and pick up of children attending Discovery Camps, Safety and Security will be restricting parking in the circle south of Sampson Hoffland. The section of curb on the west side of the circle, typically designated for faculty/staff, will be designated as no parking June 7–18, 2021. The remainder of spaces in this circle will not be changed and will remain designated as faculty/staff parking. Your cooperation with this temporary change will be greatly appreciated.

Round three: Layla Saad's 'Me and White Supremacy' working groups

Starting the week of June 14, CELT will be starting our next round of faculty and staff "Me and White Supremacy" working groups. Faculty and staff are welcome and encouraged to participate in a five-week working group engaged in self-reflective action in order to "understand their white privilege and their participation in white supremacy so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on People of Color and, in turn, help other white people do better too." Please register on the CELT website.

Help choose the 2022 Paideia summer read

All faculty and staff are invited to join a reading group to assess possibilities for the 2022 Paideia summer read. Zoom discussions are Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m.–noon on July 6, 13, 20, and Aug. 3. Participants sign up on teams to lead discussions, or simply join in the conversation on each book. The reading list and schedule will be shared by June 15. Sign up on the CELT website and contact Kathy Reed <reedkath> with questions.

Retirements

Renee Lillibridge, who has worked for Luther for more than 18 years has announced her retirement effective August 5.
Doug Nelson, who has worked for Luther for more than 34 years has announced his retirement effective August 17.
Sue Drilling, who has worked for Luther for 31 years has announced her retirement effective August 13.

We congratulate Renee, Doug, and Sue and thank them for their dedicated service to the college.

Position openings

Admissions counselor (1.0 FTE): Position actively works to enroll prospective students at Luther College via in-person and virtual synchronous and asynchronous recruitment interactions. This position is responsible for meeting yearly application, acceptance, and deposit goals as determined by the director of enrollment and the vice president for enrollment management. A bachelor's degree is required and applicants must have a valid driver's license. Prior full-time experience in sales, marketing, communication, or counseling and prior undergraduate work experience at a private liberal arts college and fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required. 

Admissions Counselor and Admissions Marketing Coordinator: Position will actively work to enroll prospective students at Luther College. Responsibilities will include: directly managing an assigned recruitment territory, conducting frequent fall and spring overnight recruitment travel, presenting admissions and financial aid sessions on and off campus, serving as a liaison to Marketing and Communications staff, coordinating digital, email, and print marketing projects, assisting with financial aid training and updates for admissions staff, evaluating applications for admission and scholarship consideration, and assisting with on and off-campus recruitment events. A bachelor's degree is required and applicants must have a valid driver's license.

Associate director of athletics (1.0 FTE): Position will manage the daily operations and planning in the Regents Center and outdoor practice and competition venues; as well as supervise the directors of Legends Fitness Center, athletic equipment room, and aquatics facility. He/she will be responsible for developing and maintaining the operational calendar for events and facility usage and game management for 19 NCAA Division III sport programs. Requirements: bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred; at least three years of relevant experience in athletic administration and facilities at the collegiate level; Luther College, a member of the American Rivers Conference and NCAA Division III, is committed to providing a positive and competitive athletic experience. Screening will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. This is a 12-month position with employment aiming to begin July 26, 2021. 

Campus programming office coordinator (1.0 FTE): Position to coordinate campus room reservations and calendar dates for most events on campus. Coordinator will compile and deliver The Bulletin bi-weekly during the academic year, administer the internal Google Facilities Calendar, the public Luther College Events calendar, campus channel 17.1 and CFL digital signal. Coordinator will work closely with the director of campus programming to coordinate dates for larger, campus wide events. High school diploma and excellent computer skills including graphic design software (i.e. Canva or Adobe Illustrator), experience with HTML, and database management (i.e. Excel, Google Suite) required.

Executive assistant to the president (1.0 FTE): Position provides executive level support and is responsible for a wide range of duties that advance the college's reputation, mission and vision, and ensures the success of the president and Board of Regents by providing exceptional leadership and effective management in administration, project oversight, advancing strategic initiatives, communications, relationship-building, and decision-making. Must be able to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college. Bachelor's degree and experience providing administrative support required, with experience in higher education at a residential college or university preferred.

Grounds Technician (1.0 FTE): Position has a variety of unique opportunities. The person who fills this position will play a part in maintaining campus exterior spaces and maintaining Grounds Crew equipment. They will also play a part in the student-athlete experience at Luther College, maintaining game and practice fields. High School diploma or equivalent required. Must be able to follow instructions and have the ability to mix appropriate chemical dilution ratio and understand directions for use.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Andy Hageman published an interview with Sandra Niemi who wrote a wonderful biography of her aunt, Maila Nurmi, who invented and performed as Vampira. 

Nancy Gates Madsen and Mackenzie Zenk '21 have been awarded the Collaborative Research Award from the North Central Council of Latin Americanists Conference. Their research paper titled "Destabilizing the Binary Rhetoric of Migration in Yuri Herrera's 'Señales que precederán al fin del mundo' (Signs Preceding the End of the World)," was unanimously selected for this award during the recent NCCLA Conference.

In Jan. 2021, Loren Toussaint was a guest on the Wellness Inc. podcast with Dr. Mike Moreno.

Ideas and Creations

In the post, Storytelling with Images at Luther During the Pandemic, Nicholas Bjerke shares what it was like for the Visual Media team to capture the essence of events at the college when everything was affected by the pandemic, and how Luther still came together as a community.

Fifteen years ago today, the prime ministers of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland laid the ceremonial first stone of the Global Seed Vault on the remote island of Spitsbergen halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.
