ANNOUNCEMENTS

Homecoming 2021

Luther College has announced plans for in-person, virtual and livestreamed events to celebrate Homecoming and alumni class reunions during the month of October. Homecoming will occur Oct. 1–3. Events of this weekend will include ceremonies honoring the 2020 and 2021 Distinguished Service Award recipients, Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, music award winners and reunions for the classes of 1966, 1971, 1981, 1986, 1996, 2011 and 2016.

Reunion celebrations will continue on Saturday, Oct. 16, with the classes of 1951, 1956, 1961, 1976, 1981, 1991, 2001, and 2006.

The class of 2020 is invited to attend a reunion weekend on Oct. 29-31. This special weekend is designed to celebrate these alumni whose senior year was cut short by the pandemic.

Advance registration is encouraged, as in-person events may have attendance limits. Along with the on-campus events, there will be virtual and livestreamed events offered to all alumni throughout the month of October. Being Community updates

Luther College will remain at Level 0 Blue in the fall if no COVID-19 Indicators are activated and 70% of the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) has voluntarily provided proof of vaccination for COVID-19. Presently, 61% percent of faculty, staff, and students that are scheduled to be on campus in the fall have voluntarily submitted proof of vaccination for COVID-19. Employees who voluntarily submit proof of vaccination for COVID-19 through Luther's Voluntary COVID-19 Vaccination Program will receive a stipend in appreciation of their efforts.

Request for additional Paiedeia lecture proposals

Additional proposals will be accepted for the 2021–22 Text and Issues Lecture Series on the theme "Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education." How might our disciplines, our curriculum, and our pedagogies (education, or in the Greek sense, paideia) be considered colonial, and in what ways can and should they change? Read the full description and find the proposal form on the Paideia website. Final deadline is July 30.

Ice Cream Day

All faculty, staff, and students on campus are invited to join us in the Caf for a free build-your-own ice cream sundae bar on Thursday, July 15. At 2 p.m. enter the back door of the Caf by the ice cream machine to enjoy a mid-day treat!

Upcoming ITS upgrade

On Wednesday, July 14, ITS will be working to upgrade our Network Access Control System. During this time here will be short periods of time where users will be unable to connect to the LCWireless and LCSecure wireless networks. If you're already connected to LCWireless or LCSecure or using a wired connection, you should have uninterrupted network access.

Nordic Fest parade

Luther College faculty, staff, students, alumni, and their families are invited to represent Luther by walking in the Nordic Fest Parade on Saturday, July 24. This is an opportunity to participate in a fun community event and show your Luther pride—a free Luther t-shirt is available to those that need one! Please complete the Nordic Fest Parade 2021 form to participate.

Associate Vice President for Finance (1.0 FTE): The Associate Vice President for Finance will manage the Office for Financial Services by coordinating the financial programs, policies, and transactions that support unqualified audit reports, tax filings, and regulatory compliance; overseeing the college’s risk management program; and supporting the Vice President for Finance and Administration with budget planning and analysis and financial modeling. Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of progressively-responsible related experience required. CPA, master’s degree, and higher education experience preferred.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Temuulen Erdenebulgan '21 is using music to promote peace and create safe spaces for children in his home country of Mongolia. Erdenebulgan was selected for a 2020 Davis Projects for Peace grant for his project titled "Promoting Peace Through Music: Music is the Language of Magic." He says his main goal is to create a safe space where children can learn to play musical instruments because he believes that learning how to play music can provide some peace, build a sense of community and security, help heal scars, physical and otherwise, and help people to deal with stress and difficulties in their lives.

Kristy Gould and Jacob Noble '19 were co-authors with colleagues at Knox College on a talk presented at the Canine Science Forum virtual international meeting July 6–9 entitled "Gazing for Permission or Gazing for Help? The Effects of Encouragement and Handler Familiarity on Problem-Solving by Owned Dogs."

"A Slow Walk Through The North Country," the latest book of essays by Jerry Johnson, retired Luther director of public information, is now on sale at the Luther College Book Shop. "A Slow Walk" is also available at Dragonfly Book Store in Decorah and on amazon.com.

Felix Malpica '09 has been elected bishop of the La Crosse Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). At 34, Malpica is the youngest bishop and the first person of color to assume this role in the ELCA.
