Opening Convocation Aug. 31 (virtual event)

Celebrate the start of the new academic year and welcome the class of 2024 with a virtual Opening Convocation at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31. The convocation speaker is Thi Bui, author of "The Best We Could Do," the summer 2020 reading. Thi Bui came to the United States in 1978 as part of the "boat people" wave of refugees fleeing Southeast Asia at the end of the Vietnam War. Her graphic novel delivers personal narratives of multiple generations, set against the complex history of Vietnam in the 20th century. Opening Convocation is required for Paideia students as part of their coursework. A link will be available to the public for this live-streamed event. Limited copies of the book are still available for faculty and staff in the Luther College Book Shop.

Service of Dedication

Traditionally held in August for faculty and staff before classes begin, this year's Service of Dedication will welcome the full campus community to the academic year as part of Homecoming Weekend in October. Details and a link to this virtual event will be available in September.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

The Luther College Book Shop was featured in the cover story of the National Association of College Stores "Campus Marketplace" newsletter. Thank you to the Book Shop and their campus partners for their efforts in providing continued service to our students while mitigating health risk to the Luther community.

Loren Toussaint and colleagues at Harvard University, Hope College, and Stetson University recently published a test for COVID prevention behaviors. This is not a blood test, but a behavioral test. The test assesses the degree to which a person is engaging in recommended health behaviors to avoid exposure  to and/or infection by the coronavirus. The measure is available by contacting Loren Toussaint <touslo01> and will be published in a forthcoming issue of Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Ideas and Creations

Coming back to campus—or starting here, new, for the first time!—to this strange and wonderful new academic year may feel a bit more disorienting than usual. In "The People Are Thirsty", Pastor Anne Edison-Albright asks us to recognize "come to the water" moments and offers a word of prayer.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

In August
by Paul Laurence Dunbar

When August days are hot an' dry,
When burning copper is the sky,
I 'd rather fish than feast or fly
In airy realms serene and high.

I'd take a suit not made for looks,
Some easily digested books,
Some flies, some lines, some bait, some hooks,
Then would I seek the bays and brooks.

I would eschew mine every task,
In Nature's smiles my soul should bask,
And I methinks no more could ask,
Except--perhaps--one little flask.

In case of accident, you know,
Or should the wind come on to blow,
Or I be chilled or capsized, so,
A flask would be the only go.

Then could I spend a happy time,--
A bit of sport, a bit of rhyme
(A bit of lemon, or of lime,
To make my bottle's contents prime).

When August days are hot an' dry,
I won't sit by an' sigh or die,
I 'll get my bottle (on the sly)
And go ahead, and fish, and lie!
