Being Community updates

New 'Health Resources' section on the Being Community website
We encourage you to view the "Health Resources" section on Being Community. It offers information and resources on subjects ranging from stress management to the science of the novel coronavirus.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS    

Luther opting out of payroll tax deferral

A recent presidential memorandum allows employers to defer the employee portion of payroll taxes from September to December, 2020. Based on current guidance, the college is electing to opt out of the deferral because the deferred payroll taxes would cause additional deductions from employee paychecks from January to April, 2021, and the deferral would present administrative challenges.

Conservation grazing (goats!) in Luther's Roslien woods

As a restoration project to reduce the abundance of invasive shrubs, Luther's natural areas will be home to a local goat herd for the next four-six weeks. Roslien woods has wide, mowed trails for access to visit the goats.  High voltage electric fencing keeps the goats enclosed so do not touch the fence, lean over fencing, or enter the goat enclosure. Wellness blood screenings

During 2020, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Sign up for the Tuesday, Sept. 15, blood screenings with Gunderson here on campus by contacting Wellness, <wellness>. All staff must complete a blood screening, a routine physical and health risk assessment form by Dec. 31, to avoid a $25 increase per month in your insurance. WMC is not conducting blood screenings on-site so contact Wellness about your options. Physicals are also a couple months out so don't hesitate to get yours scheduled!

Greater Good Mindful Well-being Group

Hoping to bring more meaning or well-being into your life and work? Wellness is leading three week-long groups engaging in science-based practices for a meaningful life using the Greater Good Toolkit from UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. The first group begins on Sept. 9. For more information or to join visit the group webpage.

Preus Library September Term Hours

September Term hours for Preus Library are Monday-Friday: 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday: Noon-5 p.m. The library is now open with limited services to students, faculty, emeriti, and staff. In support of safety and social distancing, face coverings are required, the stacks will remain closed, and seating will not be available. Materials may be requested for check-out or browsing through the "Place Holds" feature of the online catalog or by contacting the Circulation Desk. $1.7 million federal TRIO grant

Luther College has been awarded a 5-year federal grant for its TRIO Achievement Program. Luther is among several colleges and universities selected to receive grants through the U.S. Department of Education. The college will receive more than $330,000 during the first year of the grant, which begins Sept. 1, with the total 5-year amount projected at approximately $1.7 million. Every 5 years TRIO programs across the country compete nationally for continued funding.

Chapel this week

Chapel without Walls, M-W-F, 10:30-10:50 a.m.
We can't gather like we normally do. This season, we will rethink the walls that provide a sense of belonging, comfort, and definition to sacred space. In content and form, chapel will explore sacred space and where its boundaries and barriers lie. Monday and Friday during September term, chapel will be held online; streaming links are available on Luther's online events calendar. Wednesdays, chapel will be held on Bentdahl Commons.

'Ask an Alum'
Our September Friday chapel series begins with messages from Black alumni, organized through a collaboration with the Black Alumni Association. On days when we hear from alumni, we will host an "Ask an Alum" Zoom gathering from 4-4:30 p.m. that afternoon, in order to enable students to further connect with the chapel speakers. These gatherings provide an opportunity to make connections, network and learn from people who began their journeys at Luther, and are making an impact across the world. The "Ask an Alum" virtual event links are available via the corresponding Fridays' Weekday Chapel posts on luther.edu/events.

Free film screening tomorrow, Sept. 9: 'John Lewis: Good Trouble'

A screening of the new documentary, "John Lewis: Good Trouble" will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the CFL Main Hall. The film traces the courageous life of the civil-rights icon and longtime congressman from Georgia. Tickets are free but required for admission. One ticket per Luther account. Visit tickets.luther.edu, call 387-1357, or stop by the Ticket Office in the CFL. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the screening is not open to the general public. Sponsored by the Center for Sustainable Communities, the Black Student Union, and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.

Position openings

Maintenance Mechanic/Plumber (1.0 FTE): Maintenance staff will perform all types of building maintenance and repair generated from the Facilities Services work order system. Most work will be related to plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems. Staff member will interpret drawings, schematics, and blueprints, provide service on the steam distribution system and assist boiler operators and other departments as needed. Candidates must have a high school diploma and a state of Iowa plumbing license. Also required is at least four years formal working experience in installation and repair in the following areas: plumbing, heating, steam and air conditioning; computer skills for accessing the college's web-based work order system, building automation system, and email; and a valid driver's license and acceptable MVR check.
