Being Community updates

Flu shots for employees

Luther will be providing flu shots for employees 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Sept. 29. New this year, you won't have to pay and submit for reimbursement! You just need to sign up for a time slot. If you are not on the Luther insurance, you will need to provide a copy of your insurance card so we can have that company directly billed. Email <wellness> with your UMR# and birthdate to register. Flu vaccination is especially important for the 2020-2021 flu season, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Flu vaccines will not prevent COVID-19, but they will reduce the burden of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths on the health care system and conserve scarce medical resources for the care of people with COVID-19.

No winter clothes donations this year

The CIES office will not be accepting donations of used winter gear this year, due to COVID-19 concerns.

Lunch-n-Lemonade Sept. 22

Join the Wellness staff out in Bentdahl Commons or via Zoom at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for a time of sharing on how you have made "lemonade" in this period of lemons. Bring your mask and lunch! We are excited to see you in person or through the screen. Please register so we know how much lemonade to purchase!

Luther opting out of payroll tax deferral

A recent presidential memorandum allows employers to defer the employee portion of payroll taxes from September to December, 2020. Based on current guidance, the college is electing to opt out of the deferral because the deferred payroll taxes would cause additional deductions from employee paychecks from January to April, 2021, and the deferral would present administrative challenges.

Conservation grazing (goats!) in Luther's Roslien Woods

As a restoration project to reduce the abundance of invasive shrubs, Luther's natural areas will be home to a local goat herd for the next four-six weeks. Roslien Woods has wide, mowed trails for access to visit the goats.  High voltage electric fencing keeps the goats enclosed so do not touch the fence, lean over fencing, or enter the goat enclosure. Luther and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church partner together

Luther College and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church are partnering together to better serve the faith needs of students and community members. The two entities are now considered Collaborative Learning sites for Wartburg Seminary Students, including Vicar Kathryn Thompson, who will work with both entities for the next four years. At Luther, she will lead Monday chapel, work with the Multifaith House, and help connect interested students with area congregations. At Good Shepherd, she will continue her responsibilities to the Children, Youth and Family Ministry.

Chapel this week

Chapel without Walls, M-W-F, 10:30-10:50 a.m.
We can't gather like we normally do. This season, we will rethink the walls that provide a sense of belonging, comfort, and definition to sacred space. In content and form, chapel will explore sacred space and where its boundaries and barriers lie. Monday and Friday during September term, chapel will be held online; streaming links are available on Luther's online events calendar. Wednesdays, chapel will be held on Bentdahl Commons.

'Ask an Alum'
Our September Friday chapel series begins with messages from Black alumni, organized through a collaboration with the Black Alumni Association. On days when we hear from alumni, we will host an "Ask an Alum" Zoom gathering from 4-4:30 p.m. that afternoon, in order to enable students to further connect with the chapel speakers. These gatherings provide an opportunity to make connections, network and learn from people who began their journeys at Luther, and are making an impact across the world. The "Ask an Alum" virtual event links are available via the corresponding Fridays' Weekday Chapel posts on luther.edu/events.

Home sporting events

The American Rivers Conference intends to move forward with fall competition in women's and men's cross country, women's golf, and women's tennis. See the Complete Sports Schedule for all fall sporting events, both home and away.

Save the Date: Farwell Distinguished Lecture Oct. 15

The Global Health Governance Board, the President's Office, Campus Programming, Center for Global Learning, and Center for Ethics and Public Engagement are pleased to announce this fall's Farwell Distinguished Lecture: Luther regent and renowned public health expert, Dr. Michael Osterholm '75. Dr. Osterholm will speak live via Zoom Webinar on Thursday, Oct. 15. Details to be announced soon.

Sympathy

Werner Nitschke passed away Thursday, Sept. 3. There will be a gathering in Werner's honor 1-3 p.m. Sept. 19, at the Fish Hatchery in Decorah, near the waterfall. This was one of Werner's favorite places and he loved to be surrounded by the beauty of the area and the eagles. It was his wish that we hear from you and that we share our stories. Position openings

Maintenance Mechanic/Plumber (1.0 FTE): Maintenance staff will perform all types of building maintenance and repair generated from the Facilities Services work order system. Most work will be related to plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems. Staff member will interpret drawings, schematics, and blueprints, provide service on the steam distribution system and assist boiler operators and other departments as needed. Candidates must have a high school diploma and a state of Iowa plumbing license. Also required is at least four years formal working experience in installation and repair in the following areas: plumbing, heating, steam and air conditioning; computer skills for accessing the college's web-based work order system, building automation system, and email; and a valid driver's license and acceptable MVR check.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Freeda Brook with Martinique Hallerduff authored the chapter "Feminists at Work: Organizational Leadership in Academic Libraries," in Advances in Library Administration and Organization.

Joseph Keeley '20, has moved up from an alternate Fulbright award winner to a finalist. Keeley, a history and political science major from Eden Prairie, Minn., was named an alternate in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for 2020-21 but has recently learned he is receiving the grant and will be completing an English Teaching Assistantship in South Korea.

Gereon Kopf organized two workshops on Global Critical Philosophy of Religion (one sponsored by a Wabash grant), presented at the online conference on Robophilosophy organized by Aarhus University on the use of embodied AI in religious services, contributed a blog on the master-disciple relationship in Zen Buddhism to Buddhistdoot.net, and published an essay on the importance of philosophy in today’s world in the Kitetsu Magazine.

Loren Toussaint was interviewed by KIMT, KCRG, and WXOW regarding his Clean and Contain Scale, a measure to assess prevention behaviors during a pandemic and corresponding research.

In the post "Creating Community, Creating Connections, and Yes, Covering Some Content", Professor Kate Elliott shares how building community and helping students thrive have been at the forefront for Luther faculty as they've prepared courses for fall 2020.

And finally...

Get ready to celebrate Constitution Day!

The Constitution of the United States was signed by the Constitutional Convention delegates in Independence Hall, Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787. Constitution Day became a holiday in 1997, and is celebrated on Sept. 17 each year. Prior to 1997, Sept. 17 was known as Citizenship Day, in celebration of the signing of the Constitution.

Each year, in keeping with Luther's commitment to the liberal arts of citizenship and in accord with Federal mandates, we offer various resources for greater understanding of the United States Constitution. To that end, Preus Library maintains a Constitution Day research website with guides to several excellent learning opportunities.
