Being Community updates
Alert Level 2 Teal
Luther College is currently in Alert Level 2 Teal. Face masks are required to be worn in all indoor spaces with minimal exceptions, found here. The increase in alert level is due to activation of the following indicators: Luther College Case Count Trend, Community Spread on Campus, Alert Level in Winneshiek County, and Test Positivity Rate in Winneshiek County. A description of operations at Luther College while at this alert level may be found on the COVID-19 Indicators and Alert Levels web page.
Testing
Asymptomatic testing at EAST is currently restricted to asymptomatic close contacts and unvaccinated music ensemble students and student-athletes. If you have symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19: Students, contact the Health Service. Employees: Call Winneshiek Medical Center, Winneshiek County Public Health, or Gundersen for testing and notify HR.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Dorian Vocal Festival, Jan. 9-10
The Dorian Vocal Festival takes place Jan. 9-10. We will have nearly 800 students on campus for this event, and all of them will have had to submit proof of vaccination OR a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours upon arrival. Thanks for welcoming these students to campus, as we hope that many of them will become future Norse! We are thrilled to be returning to these important recruitment events.
Monthly staff meetings in January
The next monthly staff meetings will be held on Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 13 at 9 a.m., in Peace Dining Room but dependent on the current alert level. Both meetings will cover the same agenda. All staff are encouraged to come to hear important updates from college leadership and your colleagues. Meeting dates for the year are posted on the Human Resources website. Watch for any update in Being Community weekly or next week's Tuesday.
Fall 2021 Agora available now
Your fall 2021 Agora: the Liberal Arts at Luther College is available now. This issue features an essay by Gereon Kopf and another by Wanda Deifelt, Robert Shedinger, and Todd Green, with senior students Dominique Stringer and Nora Nyi Mint. Sabbatical reports in this issue are from Anna Peterson, Joseph Madrigal, Nancy Gates Madsen, and Novian Whitsitt. There are chapel talks by Storm Bailey, Melissa Bills, Brooke Joyce, Guy Nave, David Faldet, Jenifer Ward, Patrick Cabello-Hansel, Nicholas Shaneyfelt, and Rick Guha '22 in this issue as well. Hard copies are limited; each department will have several to share, but if you need one, please let the Agora staff know at <agora>.
Spend J-term learning how to swim
More than a third of adults in the United States can't swim the length of a pool, according to the CDC, which puts them at risk of being one of the 10 people who drown every day in this country. Join licensed ATLS instructors Dr. Kate and Dr. Tom and learn how to be water safe. Lessons are held twice a week, Wednesdays 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays 3:30 to 4 p.m., starting on Jan. 5. Please email Kate Elliott <ellika03> for more info and to sign up.
Employee yoga class
An employee yoga class will be starting Jan. 10 with Molly Gallagher as the instructor. Class will be held on Mondays from 1:30-2:15 p.m. for the four weeks of J-term. Wellness will subsidize the total fee so your cost is a mere $20! Sign up soon as this is a great opportunity for all current employees and their spouses.
Not Quite Free Lunch
Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical workspace and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu is grilled cheese, tomato soup, and crackers. Baker's choice dessert.

MLK Day community service project - donations needed!
In honor of MLK Jr. Day, Luther Student Organizations are teaming up with Lutheran Services in Iowa to welcome nearly 500 Afghan refugees who are relocating to Iowa over the next 6 months. Bring your donations for Welcome Kits to the SAC office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. any time this month, and join us the week of Jan 17-21 to make fleece-tie blankets and help assemble the kits. CEPE continues speaker stipends
The CEPE encourages faculty to connect with expert colleagues and call on them to participate in classes. If you'd like to invite a speaker to Zoom into your class or visit in person (if permitted under the current Alert Level), the CEPE will provide a stipend of $200 for your guest. To Dennis Dotzler and family on the death of his sister Barbara Bigler, of Ridgeway, Iowa. She passed away on Dec. 14, 2021. A private family funeral service was held on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021.
To Erik Stoen on the passing of his father Herbert Stoen, age 92, of rural Decorah, Iowa. Herbert died on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021, at Meadows of Mabel in Mabel, Minnesota.
To Terry Ollendieck and family on the death of his brother in law Tim Hyke of Cresco, Iowa. He passed away on Dec. 28, 2021. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, at the Our Lady of Lourdes in Elma, Iowa.
Position openings
Visual media manager (1.0 FTE): Self-directed storyteller with a talent and skill for visual media production. The visual media manager is responsible for the direction and creation of innovative digital media to tell the Luther story on the web, social media, and traditional media. The position supervises two student-staffed production teams (video and photo) and will work closely with key marketing and communications staff as well as other campus departments to conceptualize, produce, shoot, edit, publish, and promote high-quality visual media consistent with the Luther College brand. Required experience and skills: five years of relevant experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
Accounting clerk (1.0 FTE): The accounting clerk is responsible for accounts payable functions of processing invoices/payment vouchers for payment and managing vendor relations, administering the purchase card program, payroll backup, and institutional loan administration. High school diploma with at least one-year experience in accounts payable position is required. Associate degree in accounting is helpful.

Gereon Kopf's "How to make Philosophy of Religion Relevant to the Future" was published in the "Philosophy of Religion" blog series.
Loren Toussaint's research on older people, meaning in life, forgiveness, and mental health was featured in a story in Greater Good Magazine. The work was completed in collaboration with Drs. Alyssa Cheadle (08; Hope College), Jessie Dezutter (KU-Leuven, Belgium), and Dr. David Williams (Harvard University).
Orçun Selçuk has published a review of the book "Assessing the Left Turn in Ecuador" in the latest issue of Latin American Politics and Society. You can access the review here.

I hope you start the new year understanding and appreciating just how worthy you are and always have been. Allow yourself to remove the pressure that comes when December turns to January. Instead of saying I hope this year is good to you, I'd rather say I hope you're good to yourself this year, because you deserve your deepest desires, you deserve your accomplishments, and above all, you deserve your love."
