Being Community updates

Alert Level 2 Teal
Luther College is currently in Alert Level 2 Teal. Face masks are required to be worn in all indoor spaces with minimal exceptions. Events with an expected attendance of 50 or more people must be reviewed by the CRT. Faculty and staff should send their review requests to Sally Ming, <mingsa01>.  A description of operations at Luther College while at this alert level may be found on the COVID-19 Indicators and Alert Levels web page.

COVID-19 Employee Supplement
The CRT has revised the COVID-19 Employee Supplement sections on quarantine and isolation guidelines in accordance with new guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2021-22 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

HR Updates

2022 Form 1095-C Employer-Provided Health Insurance
Human Resources is working to prepare 2022 Form 1095-C for employees. Those forms must be provided by March 2, 2022, but we expect to have them ready by early February. You are not required to include Form 1095-C when you file your taxes. Please go to the Tax Information section of NorseHub to consent to electronic delivery of Form 1095-C in order to receive forms faster and save the college printing expense. Please contact Matt Bills at 387-1189 with any questions.

Retirement plan
Participants in the Luther's TIAA retirement plan should have recently received an email from Pentegra Retirement Service with the subject line: "Important Information Regarding Your Retirement Plan with Luther College." This is an important email that contains an attachment of the newest retirement plan information and documents. Your current salary reductions will continue until such time that you choose to submit a new salary deferral form. The MEP TIAA salary reduction form is included in the attached document and also available on the HR website. Please call 387-1415 with any questions.

MLK week service project

Join student organizations in the Union Lobby during the week of January 17 to help assemble "Welcome Kits," make fleece blankets, and create welcome notes for Afghan refugees relocating to Iowa. We will also continue to accept donations all week. Items especially needed are clear plastic tubs and twin sized quilts/comforters. Email Jenna <mockje01> with questions.

Summer employment supervisor meeting Jan. 27

Will you be supervising student employees this summer? Join the supervisor meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, to learn about 2022 summer employment at Luther. Even if you have previously supervised summer students you are highly encouraged to attend. With the management of summer employment shifting from the HR department to Student Employment, there will be changes in how the process and program will work this summer. Order Valentine's Day treats

Give a treat to a friend, your kids, or a special someone. Giant heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies are waiting for your personalized message or order a dozen cookies with all the fixings to frost your own at home. Place your order online by Monday, Feb. 7, and pick them up in the Dining Services office on Monday, Feb. 14.

Library fully open for browsing/studying with new delivery options for Holds Placed

Preus Library remains fully open to students, faculty, and staff during Level 3 Yellow status. Social distancing and masks are required; group study rooms are limited to 1-2 people. Shelves are open for browsing and materials can be checked out. Holds can be placed in the online catalog for in-person pickup or delivery via campus mail. Luther College Woman's Club to meet virtually Jan. 18

Kate Rattenborg '83, owner of two independent bookstores in Decorah, will present "The Role of an Independent Bookstore in the Community" at the next meeting of the LCWC, Tuesday, Jan. 18. Chair massage

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist weekly on the first and third Mondays of the month. Prices are $30 for 20 minutes or $40 for 30 minutes chair massages (cost includes tip and is payable by cash, check, or card at appointment or when booking). Massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety, and enhance immune system function. Chair massage is done on a chair designed for massaging the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. Massages are done fully clothed. Sign up for a 20 or 30 minute session. New location: Union 102, inside the Student Organizations Suite.

Upcoming Bookprat discussions with Maren Johnson

Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" will be discussed via zoom at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, and Wendy Swallow's "Search for Nora: After the Doll's House" will follow on March 16. Ibsen's play is a revolutionary classic that centers on Nora, a middle-class wife and mother, who challenges gender roles and traditional expectations for women living in the 19th century. The second book continues Nora's story. Sign up to receive your free copies and register for one or both discussions. A Civic Sustainability event, in collaboration with the CEPE, Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies, and Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum.

Calling All Worship Volunteers!
We are excited for our spring semester worship plans, including some great new opportunities (stay tuned!)—but we need your help! We want chapel and other worship opportunities to be a true Luther community effort, celebrating the gifts and offerings of our campus community. All students, staff, and faculty are invited and encouraged to participate in worship leadership this spring, whether to read scripture, help with communion, or share your voice in song! MLK Opportunities for Prayer and Reflection
During this MLK Week, you are invited to take a break in your day and come to the CFL Recital Hall to walk the labyrinth in prayer, especially reflecting on the ongoing work of peacemaking and antiracism to which we are called. Please mask, distance, and remove your shoes before stepping onto the labyrinth. Also join us for Wednesday Holden Evening Prayer at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, which will include a time of reflection and meditation on the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. This service will take place in-person in the CFL Recital Hall and will also be livestreamed on the College Ministries YouTube channel.

SAC Cinema Presents: 'Selma' Jan. 21

Come watch 'Selma' at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, in Valders 206. Free of charge. Set during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, this critically acclaimed film depicts the actions of Martin Luther King Jr. and the marches from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery to secure voting rights for black Americans. SAC Spring Concert Announced!

SAC Concerts is excited to announce Tai Verdes as our spring concert on Saturday, April 2 8:00PM in the Regents Center. Tickets are $15. Three months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Tai Verdes was an essential worker with a 9-to-5 job at an LA Verizon Wireless store. Position openings

Maintenance Mechanic/Electrician (1.0 FTE): Position will perform all types of building maintenance and repair. Most work will be related to the various electrical systems on campus from three phase primary voltages to low voltage control systems. Work will meet the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) standards. High school diploma and a State of Iowa electrical license required. Preference given to a journeyman's license. Four years of formal working experience in installation and repair of electrical systems, a valid driver's license and computer skills to access web-based work order system are also required.  

Payroll Specialist (1.0 FTE): Position is responsible for timely and accurate preparation and production of all campus payrolls and associated reporting. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to learn and utilize Colleague database software, Glacier nonresident alien tax software, Microsoft Excel, and Business Objects reporting software. Relevant job experience and accounting skills are necessary with proven ability to keep up-to-date on IRS payroll regulations pertaining to both US residents and nonresidents for tax purposes. A bachelor's degree is desirable, but not required.
