ANNOUNCEMENTS

No Spring Convocation

Due to concerns regarding the ongoing spread of the omicron variant, there will be no Spring Convocation on the first Thursday of classes (Feb. 3). Instead, President Ward will lead a forum for faculty and staff 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24. During the forum, either virtually or in-person, President Ward and members of the Cabinet will provide a mid-year update, and President Ward will lead a discussion on her four vision themes. Further details about the forum will be shared via email in the coming weeks.

Upcoming changes to the Tuesday

Beginning Feb. 8, 2022 changes will be made to the weekly staff and faculty Tuesday newsletter. Please note the following:

  • The Tuesday will only be shared via email, and will no longer be posted on luther.edu/tuesday
  • Each submission will only be posted for one issue. Those who would like to have a post appear for multiple weeks must resubmit each week. Please plan accordingly
  • The email list for the Tuesday will no longer be open for subscription, and will be limited to staff, faculty, and emeriti recipients

For current recipients of the Tuesday who are not a current Luther employee or emeriti, you will be contacted regarding opportunities to stay informed about what's happening at Luther.

Being Community updates

In preparation for the spring semester, the CRT reviewed the system of COVID Indicators and Alert Levels to incorporate learnings from the campus impact of the omicron variant. Read the Being Community Spring Semester Update to learn more about the revised system that incorporates these learnings, as well as Luther’s plans for the beginning of the spring semester.

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2021-22 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

HR Updates

Date change: monthly staff meetings in February
The staff meetings for Wed. Feb. 2 and Thurs. Feb. 3 have been rescheduled. Please plan to attend either Wed. Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. or Thurs. Feb. 17 at 9 a.m., both in Peace Dining Room. Major topics to be covered will include the budget planning process and strategic planning updates. You will also have the chance to learn about the upcoming Giving Day and about sustainability. Meeting dates for the year are posted on the Human Resources website.

TIAA investment changes assistance
Help is available if you want to make changes to your TIAA investment lineup, the Luther retirement plan transition, financial planning, and more. Information is available on the HR website (TIAA MEP Recap January 2022) along with a link to schedule a virtual meeting with an advisor. You can also reach Millennium’s scheduling team at [email protected] or by phone at 877-435-2489, and select option 1. Advisors will also be coming to campus in the spring.

Feb. 11 COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic - Boosters, 1st, and 2nd doses available
On Friday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Winneshiek County Public Health will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic in Peace. The clinic is open to all Luther students, faculty, and staff. First, second, or booster doses of Pfizer and Moderna will be available. Sign up not required. Participants getting their second or booster dose should bring their vaccination card or a photo of their card. Digital photos are accepted. Face masks are required in the clinic area regardless of alert level. You may also call Public Health at 382-4848 to schedule an appointment if you are unable to attend the clinic.

Free COVID Testing and COVID Test Reimbursements
For Luther employees on the UMR health plan: You can be reimbursed for the cost of over-the-counter at-home COVID-19 test kits, effective Jan. 15, 2022. UMR health insurance members should pay cash and submit a Prescription Drug Reimbursement Claim Form to Express Scripts for reimbursement. Members are limited to 8 tests per rolling 30 days. For all U.S. households: The White House launched the covidtests.gov website. Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests. The tests are free. Orders will usually ship in 7-12 days.

Document Center has resealable sleeves with lanyards for your vaccination cards for $2.

Nottingham 2023-24 directors

The Office of the Provost and the Center for Global Learning are pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Whitfield and Spencer Martin as the 2023-24 Nottingham Program co-directors. We are grateful to these faculty members for providing leadership to a significant and longstanding off-campus program.

Dorian Orchestra Festival Feb. 6–7

The Dorian Orchestra Festival will be held on campus Sunday and Monday, Feb. 6–7. Festival participants will be eating lunch Monday from 12:15–1:30 p.m., so please plan accordingly. All of the students attending are considered prospective students and have a wide range of academic interests in addition to being talented musicians. Thank you for welcoming these 90 high school students to our campus! The Grand Concert occurs at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, in the CFL Main Hall; all are welcome to attend.  

February's Not Quite Free Lunch


Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8th, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical workspace and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu is thick and zesty chili with beef and pork, vegetarian sweet potato and black bean chili, caramel swirl brownies and beverages.

Employee yoga class


A six-week employee yoga class will be starting Feb. 7 with Molly Gallagher as the instructor. Class will be held on Mondays from 1:30-2:15 p.m. Wellness will subsidize the total fee so your cost is a mere $30! Sign up soon as this is a great opportunity for all current employees and their spouses.

February Chapel: We've Come This Far by Faith

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge God, who will make straight your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6) In this Black History Month, our chapel offerings will reflect on the faithfulness of God and the resilience offered us by our faith commitments and traditions. As the hymn goes, "We've come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord; trusting in his holy word, he's never failed us yet." (TFF 197) Join us for chapel at 10:30 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Chapel resumes on Wednesday, Feb. 2, and continues each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30 a.m. while classes are in session.

  • Mondays: Morning Prayer, take 20 minutes to sing, pray, and reflect (CFL Recital Hall)
  • Wednesdays: Rest and Recharge, join us for a variety of mindfulness and spiritual practices, including meditation, movement, art, and music (CFL Recital Hall)

In honor of Black History Month, College Ministries is celebrating black leaders in faith, present and past, and giving thanks for their legacy and impact. NEW! Emmaus: Evening Communion Worship
Starting this semester, join College Ministries for a weekly evening communion service, using Marty Haugen’s Holden Evening Prayer liturgy. All students, staff, and faculty are invited. Distinguished Lecture: 'The Politics of Critical Race Theory' Feb. 10

In recognition of Black History Month, Luther College will host "The Politics of Critical Race Theory," a lecture by Gloria Ladson-Billings at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 via Zoom. Ladson-Billings is known for her work in culturally relevant teaching and equity-focused instruction. She has done extensive research on the application of critical race theory in education. In her talk, Ladson-Billings will discuss how critical race theory applies to the political landscape, culture wars, and how it impacts perception of educational opportunities.

Paideia Text and Issues Lecture: 'Decolonizing the Music Theory Classroom' Feb. 15

Brooke Joyce will present "Decolonizing the Music Theory Classroom" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, continuing the Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture series "Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education." Joyce examines how teaching seemingly innocent scales, chords, and key signatures needs reconsideration. The talk will take place in person in the CFL Recital Hall, and will also be livestreamed. Information at luther.edu/events/.

Sympathy

To the friends and family of Tom Williams Schmidt who passed away suddenly on Dec. 30, 2021 at the age of 74. Tom joined the faculty of Luther College as an assistant professor of accounting in the fall of 1977. Tenure in 1983 and promoted to associate professor in 1984. He also served as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team from 1978-1980. Tom left Luther in 1988 to pursue a doctorate at the University of Missouri. Surviving Tom are his wife, Carel Wolk, sister Mary (Larry) Shollenbarger, his son Matt, daughter Holly (Ryo) Shibata, stepdaughter Kelli Wolk (Ron Day) and grandchildren, Gram and Sam Schmidt and Anna Day. A memorial service on campus is planned for some time in May

Position openings

Academic/administrative building custodian (0.81 FTE, benefit-eligible): This position has the opportunity to impact the daily life of students, as well as staff and faculty by maintaining office space, classrooms, restrooms, hallways, etc. They will also help support events on campus when those events happen in the buildings they are assigned to. This role will primarily be responsible to ensure clean and sanitary conditions for academic and administrative spaces. Hours will typically be 4–10:30 a.m. Monday–Friday. High school diploma and/or equivalent preferred, but not required.

Assistant Director of the Center for lntercultural Engagement and Student Success (CIES) and Coordinator of the Multicultural Student Program: This position will serve as the point person for the development of a comprehensive multicultural student service program that meets the current needs of US BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students. Assistant director will assist the director with campus wide training and education programs and provide leadership and staff supervision in their absence. Bachelor's degree required, master's degree in higher education, intercultural communication and competence; sociology/social psychology/social work with emphasis on social justice preferred.  

Development Office Coordinator and Assistant to the Vice President (1.0 FTE): Position to support the daily administrative operations and programs in the development office and provide direct administrative support to the development directors and the Vice President. Associate's degree, or equivalent work experience is required; bachelor's degree preferred. 

Director to lead a grant-funded TRIO Student Support Services program (1.0 FTE): The TRIO Achievement Program features a highly-structured, student-centered retention model reliant on timely and proactive services, activities, and evidence-based interventions. A master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, student personnel, social work, psychology, or related field is required. Also required is at least five years' experience with TRIO programs or similar projects supporting the success of targeted populations and a proven track record of successful project management and grant management experience.
