Being Community updates

The CDC’s COVID-19 Integrated View now lists Winneshiek County at a “substantial” level of transmission. Though Luther College is in Level 0 Blue: Normal, the COVID Response Team (CRT) is now strongly encouraging those on campus to wear a face mask while indoors.

The Being Community website is the hub of information and inspiration for Luther's approach to the 2021-22 academic year. We invite community questions and feedback.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Call for nominations

We have two vacancies on the College Resource Council, to be appointed by the President: one for a faculty or staff member who has expertise directly related to matters of diversity to replace Wintlett Taylor-Browne, and one for a staff member to replace Jay Uthoff. Both roles should be filled by individuals with budget experience. The term is for three years. Please send nominations to Tara Quass, executive assistant to the president at <quasta01>. 

Parking restriction notice

On Saturday, Aug. 28, Luther will be filled with excitement as first-year students and their families experience the joy of moving into their residence halls. In order to help facilitate the move-in process, we will be reserving parking areas near the halls to accommodate the movers. Special parking restrictions will go into effect starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27. The small parking lot south of Ylvisaker and the lot north of Valders will be reserved for vehicles unloading. High street between Jenson and Campus House will be designated as a one-way street, west to east, so moving vehicles may park on the north side of the street near Brandt. There will be no parking on the south side of the street. Faculty, staff, and students are asked to refrain from parking in these areas. Thank you for your cooperation in extending this welcome to the newest members of the Luther community.          

Jr. Norse Basketball Clinic

The Luther College Women's & Men's Basketball teams are offering boys and girls in 1st-5th grades to join them for Junior Norse Clinics. The clinics will be held 6:15 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Regents Center gyms. Dates are Sept. 21 and 28, Oct. 5 and 12. Each week junior Norse will have the opportunity to interact with members of the 2021-22 Luther Men's and Women's Basketball teams through participating in fundamental drills, teamplay, shooting competitions, and more. HR updates

Return to regular work hours
The college will return to regular work hours, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Friday, on Monday, Aug. 16, (two weeks prior to the start of classes).

Staff Handbook updates
A June 2021 updated Staff Handbook is on the HR website along with a summary of three major changes. Please call HR at 387-1415 if you have questions. Thank you.

'Security Update Applied to Drive' email messages

Google has been sending email notices regarding upcoming security updates that will be applied to Google Drive in mid-September. The emails are legitimate and a link is in the email indicating which of your files will be impacted. Another link provides directions on how to properly share files going forward. The Technology Help Desk is available to assist you with this transition and will be reviewing additional procedural guidance from Google as it becomes available.

August Luther Works Summit

This fall kicks off the Luther Works work study program. If you are a work study supervisor then you are a Luther Works Leader. Join others at an in-person Luther Works Summit to learn more about leading work study students and helpful tools that are being developed. We will gather 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, in Baker Commons.

Nordic Brew closed/Oneota Market open

Nordic Brew will be closed Aug. 17–27. Oneota Market will open Aug. 17 for regular business hours of 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday–Friday.

Napkin holder advertising requests

Any approved campus organization, department or office may reserve advertising space in the Cafeteria napkin holders for up to one week at a time. To place a request, fill out the Napkin Holder Advertisement Request form and the Dining Services Office will verify via email if the requested week is available to advertise. Please be considerate of other groups and only reserve up to one week per month. Questions or comments contact Dining Services <diningservices>.

Celebration of life

To the family and friends of Gary Embretson '59, who passed away on Sept. 18, 2020, at the age of 83. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at The Tavern Grill in Apple Valley, MN. Family and friends are invited to attend.

Position openings

Annual Giving Program Coordinator (1.0 FTE): The annual giving program coordinator supports the daily operations of the annual giving team in raising annual unrestricted and restricted gifts for the College. Associates degree or equivalent experience and two years related professional work experience required. 

Bookshop Marketing and Merchandise Buyer (1.0 FTE): Position will coordinate all promotions and events, maintain bookstore website and social media accounts, purchase books and gift items and perform various duties in the day-to-day operation of the bookstore. High School education and retail and/or marketing experience is required. Knowledge of social media platforms, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office Suite are essential. Computer science/coding background is helpful. Must be a self-starter on tech research and ongoing marketing research.

Multimedia Lead (1.0 FTE): Position works with faculty, staff, and students and participates on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to promote and support the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical, and other electronic media in support of both online and on-campus teaching, learning, research, and administrative purposes. The Multimedia Lead also plans, develops, and manages the operations of the Digital Media Center which includes the Multimedia Lab, the Multimedia Studio, the Photo Studio, the One Button Studio, and the Makerspace. Baccalaureate degree is required along with at least two years of experience in multimedia technologies. Experience in higher education is strongly preferred. Also preferred is experience or skill in leadership, team-building, and troubleshooting standard operating systems, productivity suites, printing, audio, video, and broadcast technologies.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

In order to study and better understand COVID-19, Loren Toussaint and Mayo Clinic have published a COVID-19 study of risk factors. The study is based on a patient sample of more than 1,100 adults who tested positive at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester or Mayo Clinic Health System between Jan. 1 and May 23, 2020. A description of the sample can be found here. The risk factors study can be found here. Loren talked with KAAL-TV about initial findings as well.

Todd Green was recently welcomed by the Institute for Social and Policy Understanding (ISPU) as a member of its Scholar Network. Based in Washington, DC, the ISPU is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to providing research and education about American Muslims to support well-informed dialogue and decision-making. Dr. Green will provide the ISPU with expertise on Islamophobia, religion and civil rights, immigration and religion, and secularization. 

This summer, social work major Rachel Clennon and accounting major Sebastine Swamynathan partnered with CHOICE Employment Services in an effort to assess the need and develop a plan for a Special Olympics event in Decorah. As part of this year’s Social Impact Research Fellowship project, Clennon and Swamynathan developed a survey to assess the community’s interest in a Special Olympics event in town. Read more. Watch the video.
