New Iowa Impact Award

Luther College is making a personalized education more accessible through the new Iowa Impact Award. Incoming Iowa students with a GPA of at least 3.5 and a family Adjusted Gross Income of $70,000 or less will qualify for free tuition for all four years of their undergraduate experience as long as they live on campus and continue to meet the qualifications. 

Wear your Luther Blue Sept. 17!

All on campus, in Decorah, and beyond are encouraged to wear blue on Friday, Sept. 17, to help celebrate Luther Family Weekend (all weekend) and the annual Fall Community Day Picnic 2021, Saturday, Sept. 18. HR updates

Retirement plan changes
On Sept. 7, Luther staff and faculty were sent an email alerting them to retirement plan changes. Luther College has joined with other member institutions from the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (IAICU) to establish a single retirement plan called a 403(b) Multiple Employer Plan (MEP). Please refer to the original email for info on opportunities to attend group information meetings.

Title IX office has moved

The Title IX office has moved up one floor to Main 126. If you have questions, concerns, or just want to visit with the Title IX Coordinator, Kasey Nikkel, feel free to stop by, email <kasey.nikkel>, or call 387-1825.

New interim director of the Center for Global Learning

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that on Sept. 1, Chelle Meyer began a new leadership role as the interim director of the Center for Global Learning (CGL). Chelle joined the staff of Luther College in 1990 and has served as the program director for off-campus J-Terms in the CGL since 2011. Thank you to Jon Lund for his many years of leadership in the CGL. The Office of the Provost is currently reviewing applications for the next director of the center.

Library special fall book sale Sept. 17–26

Preus Library will hold a special Fall book sale Friday–Sunday, Sept. 17–26. Thousands of hardcover and paperback books will be available for purchase. Prices will decline daily beginning Tuesday.

Help spread the word: Virtual Graduate/Professional School Day Sept. 23 

Tell your students that 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, representatives from over 50 colleges and universities will be attending virtually to visit with interested students about their various graduate programs. Students can explore the colleges/universities that are attending and can register on Handshake to attend the event.

Help spread the word: Speech and Debate Center

Do you know students looking for feedback on an oral presentation? Are they struggling to formulate a focused thesis statement? Do they need help outlining clear and concise main points? Are your students unsure of what goes into a good conclusion? The Speech and Debate Center, sponsored by the Communication Studies Department, is open 7–10 p.m. Sunday–Thursday (120 Preus Library). Students can schedule an appointment on the SDC Calendar.

CPB will accept funding requests through Oct. 1

The Campus Programming Board (formerly Lecture and Fine Arts) will accept proposals through Oct. 1, 2021, for the 2021–22 academic year. Funding is awarded for events in music, theatre and dance, literary events, visual arts, and speakers in other areas. Awards will be announced by Oct. 16. Chair massages begin Sept. 20

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist weekly on Mondays for $30/20 minutes or $40/30 minutes chair massages (cost includes tip and is payable by cash, check or card at appointment or when booking), which can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. Chair massage is done on a chair designed for massaging the back, neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Massages are done fully clothed. Sign up for a 15 or 30 minute session. New location: Union 102.

Luther College Woman's Club to meet Sept. 21

Decorah historian Midge Kjome will present "The Ladies of the Club: The history of the Luther College Woman's Club" at the next meeting of the LCWC, Tuesday, Sept. 21. The meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Shuttle service from the Decorah pool lot leaves at 1:10 p.m.

Announcing Luther's Second Annual Internship Showcase Sept. 16–Oct. 3

This is an opportunity for students to share what they are learning beyond our campus, increasing awareness of valuable experiences for the Luther community. Posters will be displayed in the Union, Valders, Sampson Hoffland, CFA, and Olin. There will also be an opportunity to hear from some of the students through poster presentations during shadow block on Sept. 30 (SHL Atrium and the link to Valders).

Luther Works core competencies and job descriptions support session Sept. 22

Join other Luther Works Leaders for this workshop 9–10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, as we explore the core competencies and position descriptions. You will leave the session ready to implement competency development in your specific area. Think "Working Meeting" and bring a laptop if you have one, as well as your student work job descriptions.

October and November virtual PLEN seminars for women

PLEN (Public Leadership Education Network) is offering "Law and Legal Advocacy" (Oct. 14–16) and "Women of Color Influencing Washington" (Nov. 12–14). Explore how to influence the policy issues you are passionate about and learn the range of professional opportunities and skills required to be successful. You will network and learn from female leaders on Capitol Hill, the executive branch, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private corporations. Email the CEPE <cepe> if you'd like to participate in one of these seminars or have questions. First registration deadline is Sept. 27. All fees covered.

CEPE book group: 'The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic'

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to sign up for a book group reading Jillian Peterson's book, which examines the phenomenon of mass shootings in America, and calls for evidence-based strategies to stop these recurring tragedies. Participants will receive a free copy of the book. The group will meet during shadow block on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7. Dr. Peterson will give a talk on campus on Oct. 13. 

Not Quite Free Lunch Sept. 14

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu includes grilled turkey and Swiss melts, pasta salad, green salad, chips, and dessert. The charge is $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Contact Wellness <wellness> with questions.

Luther employee fitness classes are back!

Chapel this week

The fall chapel theme to begin the 2021-22 academic year is: "A New Creation." This theme, grounded in Isaiah 65: 17-18, invites us to reflect on God's work in continually making all things new. Monday chapels will be Sung Morning Prayer, a liturgy written by Marty Haugen '73, and led by campus organist Gregory Peterson. Wednesday and Friday chapels will include music, prayer, and reflections from a variety of speakers, such as: senior students, faculty, staff, and our new campus pastor and director of College Ministries, Pastor Melissa Bills. All chapels begin at 10:30 a.m. and take place in the CFL Main Hall unless noted otherwise.

'9/11 and the Ethics of Memory' series of events

'Torture and Terror at Guantánamo Bay: A Muslim Chaplain’s Firsthand Account of US Human Rights Abuses after 9/11' Sept. 15
At  7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, James Yee, one of the first imams in the U.S. military, will present a virtual lecture, recounting his experience serving as a chaplain to Muslim prisoners at Guantánamo Bay after 9/11 and will speak to his later imprisonment after being falsely accused of spying and aiding the Taliban/Al-Qaeda prisoners. He was held in solitary confinement at the Consolidated Naval Brig in Charleston, South Carolina, for 76 days before being released and given an honorary discharge. Read more. 

Landscape and Seascape: Escaping Prison through Art
As part of the series, "9/11 and the Ethics of Memory," the CEPE, together with the Coalition for Civil Freedoms, is hosting an exhibit of paintings by artist, Wali. Opening Sept. 14 and running to Fall Break in Preus Library on the first floor.

Biology Colloquium Sept. 16

The biology department is pleased to have Andrew Olson '04 back to campus to speak in Valders 206 at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, as part of the fall Biology Colloquium series. The title of his talk is "Science, Medicine, and Leadership in a Pandemic." Dr. Olson is currently Associate Professor of Medicine and Mediatrics, Head, Section of Hospital Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School. All members of the Luther community interested in public health are invited. Attendees will be asked to wear masks.

Fall Community Day Sept. 18

Faculty and staff and their families are invited to the annual Community Day Picnic and football game on Saturday, Sept. 18. The annual event is sponsored by Decorah Bank and Trust in partnership with the college. Cost for the picnic is $8.00 per adult (children 16 and under are free). Kids can order a FREE "Game Pass" Created by Community T-shirt which will allow free admission to all regular season Norse athletic events for 2021-22. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 10! RSVP is required.

Loop de Loop Sept. 18

The Decorah Rotary Club's 9th annual Loop de Loop 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18. New this year, the race will start and finish at the Decorah Community Prairie and Butterfly Garden at 4 Ohio Street. Each year, the proceeds benefit local organizations or projects. This year's beneficiaries are the new Veteran's Memorial Park, the Trout Run Trail, and the Rotary Scholarship Fund. Details and sign-up.

Habitat for Humanity Pancake Breakfast Sept. 18

Luther College Habitat for Humanity invites the community to a pancake breakfast 8 a.m.–12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave. Decorah, IA. We are serving pancakes with butter and syrup, sausage, applesauce, juice, milk, and coffee.  

• $8 for adults
• $4 children 12 and under
• Free for 3 and under 

Tickets are available at the Luther Box Office payable with credit card. Cash and checks accepted at the door. Most of the seating will be outdoors to limit close contact. To-go boxes will also be available. Proceeds go to Luther College Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Service Learning Trip and Habitat for Humanity Hurricane Ida Disaster Relief.

Farwell Distinguished Lecture Sept. 24

Esteemed author Geraldine Brooks will give the 2021 Farwell Distinguished Lecture and the Luther College Writers Festival keynote address at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life via Zoom. The Pulitzer Prize-winner and New York Times bestselling author will speak about her role in giving context to the past in the address titled "Hearing the Unheard: How Historical Fiction Works." Brooks will speak to a live audience in the CFL via Zoom, with a Q&A session to follow. Masks are required for gatherings of over 100 in the CFL.

Position openings

Float custodian (1.0 FTE): Position will have the opportunity to interact with students, faculty, staff, and the guests of the college. By cleaning, sanitizing, and caring for the building areas on campus you are creating an environment where excellence and growth can occur. The float custodian fills in for an employee on leave in academic and residential buildings. Hours will typically be 5 a.m.–1:30 p.m., Monday–Friday. High school diploma and/or equivalent preferred but not required. No experience required, will receive on-the-job training. Training on blood borne pathogens and proper procedure for clean up on hazardous/infectious materials according to OSHA specifications will be required after hire. Must be able to read sufficiently to follow instructions. Also required is full range of motion and ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.

Heating plant lead boiler operator (1.0 FTE): Position will operate and provide management of the other operators at the Luther College Heating Plant. Operator will complete this work in such a manner as to provide a constant uninterrupted supply of steam to the Luther campus in a safe method to insure to all Luther College personnel, students, and visitors. High school diploma is required along with mechanical or electrical background. Must hold or be able to obtain Boiler Operator 1 certificate, Certified Pool Operators certificate, and State of Iowa Private School or College Routine Maintenance Specialty License (each can be obtained through Luther).

Housing coordinator (1.0 FTE): Position serves as the office manager for the Residence Life Office and works cooperatively with the Director of Residence Life. The Coordinator interacts extensively with a wide range of constituencies including students, parents, faculty, staff members, and off-campus clientele. High school diploma is required along with at least three years of relevant work experience or combination of education and experience. Also required is experience using Word and Excel.

Workstation support specialist (1.0 FTE): Position to participate on the User Services and Workstation Support teams within Information Technology Services (ITS) to support, maintain, monitor, update, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computer systems, software, and applications. Bachelor's degree is required along with skill and experience using and troubleshooting standard operating systems, productivity suites, printing, and audio visual/equipment. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills are also required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Gereon Kopf published an essay on "How to talk across boundaries" in "Meridian," the Newsletter of the Global Studies Center at the Gulf University for Science and Technology.

Over the summer, student Megan Priest '23, along with Jodi Meyer-Mork worked on developing a new curriculum framework that would shift away from the traditional education system towards more progressive practices. The research project has inspired Priest to go into curriculum development and instruction and will continue working on this new curriculum framework moving forward. Read more and watch the video.
