2021 Homecoming and Reunions

As a reminder, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the college is holding a series of alumni reunion events in October, in place of a single Homecoming weekend event. Thank you to all who help welcome alumni back to campus in the coming weeks! Details can be found on the Reunions and Homecoming websites.

Being Community updates

On-Campus Pfizer COVID Vaccination Clinic: 2nd and 1st Doses Available
On Friday, Oct. 1, Winneshiek County Public Health will provide an on-campus Pfizer vaccination clinic. Time: 1-4 p.m. Location: Student Organization Suite, Union.

• People who received their first doses on campus on August 30 should come for their second doses
• People who wish to receive the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine can receive it at this clinic
• No prior sign up is required. Students, faculty, and staff are all eligible to participate. The service is free

HR updates

October staff meetings
Staff meetings will continue on Oct. 6 and 7, 2021. These monthly meetings occur Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 9 a.m.; note that the location this month will be Mott-Borlaug. The Wednesday and Thursday agendas are the same, allowing staff to alternate attendance so that offices can remain open. The full schedule is posted on the Human Resources website. 

'Welcome' clings available to offices and departments

The Alumni Office has window clings featuring a welcome message for alumni, parents, families, and students (you may have seen these in the windows of many Decorah businesses). If you'd like a cling (or two) to display in your office or department, email Mariah Smith, director of parent and family engagement <smithmar>. These would be nice to have all over campus as we head into Homecoming and reunions in October!

Christmas at Luther tickets for employees

Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, Luther College faculty, staff, and emeriti may select two free tickets to the Christmas at Luther performance of your choice along with the option to purchase two more for $35 each. Order online by logging in to tickets.luther.edu and entering the code FSE21. Note: an additional promo code will be needed if you wish to purchase two more in-person tickets. You may also visit the Ticket Office in person to select your seats. New this year: Ticketed livestream of the Sunday performance for $20. Or, if you can't watch in the moment, consider an On Demand ticket to watch when it works for you. More information can be found on the Christmas at Luther website.

KWLC offers facilities to produce high quality interviews

Not Quite Free Lunch Oct. 12

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu includes Caprese Biggie Sandwich, roasted Caesar vegetable wrap, creamy coleslaw, Italian pasta salad, creamy turkey and wild rice soup, dessert and beverage.The charge is only $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Help spread the word: fall career fair Oct. 7

The Career Center is excited to announce that the fall career fair will be held in person 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in Peace Dining Room. This is a great opportunity for students to visit with employers about internships, full-time and volunteer positions. Encourage your students to join us on October 7. Explore the list of employers. Luther Sustainability operates a Reuse Closet in Valders 364. Inside you will find all kinds of helpful items for students, faculty, and staff. Find good, used items you can take for free, such as 3-ring binders (1"-5"), manilla folders, in/out trays, blank CDs, air envelopes, ink cartridges, and more. We have an inventory we can send you, but items change. You'll want to check it out 8 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays. Contact Sustainability with questions <sustainability>.

Mail Center updates

First-Class Mail ® delivery service
The United States Postal Service has announced that starting Oct. 1, 2021, First-Class Mail ® delivery service will change from 1–3 business days to 1–5 business days. Most First-Class Mail ® (60–70%) should still arrive at its destination within three business days. Mail going outside our local zone is more likely to be five business days. Please keep this change in mind with your mailing deadlines.

Include name/department on shipping address
Reminder to faculty and staff to please make sure you are including your name or your department in your shipping address for Luther College mail and packages. We are spending extra time with items that come in addressed to "Luther College" only. Thank you to those who already have made those changes.

Call for reviewers

The Oneota Reading Journal is an open-access, refereed publication of Luther College, and it needs individuals to read and review young adult and children's literature. It especially needs people to read and review fantasy written for young adults, ages 8–12. In addition to contributing to the profession, reviewers will be developing their personal libraries because people may keep the books they review. If interested, please contact Deborah Norland <norlandd> for additional information. 

EVENTS

Chapel this week

The fall chapel theme to begin the 2021-22 academic year is: "A New Creation." This theme, grounded in Isaiah 65: 17-18, invites us to reflect on God's work in continually making all things new. Monday chapels will be Sung Morning Prayer, a liturgy written by Marty Haugen '73, and led by campus organist Gregory Peterson. Wednesday and Friday chapels will include music, prayer, and reflections from a variety of speakers, such as: senior students, faculty, staff, and our new campus pastor and director of College Ministries, Pastor Melissa Bills. All chapels begin at 10:30 a.m. and take place in the CFL Main Hall unless noted otherwise.

Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Sept. 28

Gereon Kopf will present "Opening Ourselves to the World: Navigating a Global-Critical Curriculum," the first Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture of 2021-22 series "Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the CFL Recital Hall. Kopf will argue that "If philosophy of religion as well as the liberal arts are supposed to be relevant to all cultures and peoples, these disciplines have to draw from all traditions in content and in method."

'Here's My Story: Neurodiversity on Campus' Oct. 6

"Neurodiversity" refers to variations in the way the brain functions, and is becoming an important area of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion work. Counseling Service and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invite all community members to a panel discussion on neurodiversity at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the CRH. Luther students and employees with brain-based differences such as Autism, ADHD, OCD, learning disabilities, etc., will share their experiences and discuss the joys and challenges of living in a society that doesn't always accommodate all brain types.

Decorah Pride festival Oct. 7-9

Decorah Pride announces that the Pride festival and parade will take place in Decorah starting on Thursday, Oct. 7, through Saturday, Oct. 9. Decorah Pride is open to all who are part of, or supporters of, the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer-identifying) community. Because there will be a large number of people gathering close together, the Pride committee requests that masks be worn, even for outdoor events. For a list of events, visit decorahpride.org.

The Luther Book Shop is hosting two children's book authors 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2. Becky Kocourek Scharnhorst '96, is the author of "My School Stinks" and Emily Kilgore '11 is the author of "The Whatiffs." Stop by to chat with the authors and pick up a copy of the delightful children's picture books.

Retirement

Steve Kurash, who has worked at Luther for more than 17 years, has announced his retirement effective October 1. We congratulate and thank Steve for his dedicated service to the college.

Sympathy

To Julia Hageman on the loss of her father-in-law, Victor Clarence Hageman, who passed away September 21. A memorial service will take place on September 27 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Des Moines.

A memorial service for Mary Lou Mohr, professor of English emerita, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at First Lutheran Church, Decorah. Dr. Mohr taught at Luther from 1963 until her retirement in 2000, served as English Department chair, and held many leadership positions at the college. She was renowned for her excellent teaching and participation in campus activities.

Position openings

Maintenance Mechanic/Electrician (1.0 FTE): Position will perform all types of building maintenance and repair. Most work will be related to the various electrical systems on campus from three phase primary voltages to low voltage control systems. Work will meet the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) standards. High school diploma and a State of Iowa electrical license required. Preference given to a journeyman's license. Four years of formal working experience in installation and repair of electrical systems, a valid driver's license and computer skills to access web-based work order system are also required.

Registered Nurse (0.75 FTE, benefit eligible): Primary responsibilities include; holistic, culturally sensitive patient focused primary nursing care, systematic assessment and triage of acute and chronic health concerns, mental health assessment, provision of care for minor injuries, and collection of laboratory diagnostic data. Qualified applicants will have graduated from an accredited nursing school and have a current license to practice in Iowa. Bachelor of Science degree in nursing preferred. Associate degree in nursing accepted.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Todd Pedlar has received his sixth consecutive National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant, in the amount of $150,000. This grant, renewed every three years, represents 18 years of continuous funding and supports Pedlar's and his students' research in elementary particle physics to better understand the building blocks of the universe. Watch the video.

Jill Wilson presented two collaborative research projects at the 2021 Symposium on Music Teacher Education hosted by the National Association for Music Education at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (but held virtually this year): "Secondary Music Programs: Administrator Perspectives and Hiring Practices" with Jocelyn Prendergast, Truman State, and Kevin Droe, UNI, and "Examination of the Experiences of Five BIPOC Students in Music Education" with Natalie Steele Royston, Iowa State.
