New Regent

President Ward has announced that Felix Javier Malpica '09 will join the Luther College Board of Regents. "Luther College's governing documents include a provision that a member of the Board of Regents must be a sitting Bishop in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I was excited when I learned that Pastor Malpica was standing for election as bishop of the La Crosse Area Synod--not only because of its proximity to our campus, but especially because of how Bishop Malpica shows up in the world: someone who demonstrates that justice and joy can be companions, and whose own experience as a pastor, a person of color, and a musician will bring diverse perspectives to our board," said President Ward. Malpica will attend his first official Board of Regents meeting in October. 

2021 HOMECOMING THANK YOU

We wish to extend our gratitude to the entire Luther community for graciously welcoming our alumni and friends back to campus. Everyone was thrilled to be here in person and their love for Luther was evident throughout the weekend. While we only celebrated half of the class reunions and offered a limited number of events, Homecoming was a big success. We greatly appreciate your hard work and assistance, especially on top of the many challenges we are all experiencing due to staffing shortages and Covid-19 protocols. COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Flu shots for employees

Luther will be providing flu shots for employees 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Oct. 26. You just need to sign up for a time slot. If you are not on the Luther insurance, you will need to provide a copy of your insurance card so we can have that company directly billed. Email <wellness> with any questions. Flu vaccination is especially important for the 2021-22 flu season, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Flu vaccines will not prevent COVID-19, but they will reduce the burden on the health care system and conserve scarce medical resources for the care of people with COVID-19.

HR updates

Reminder: Nominations for Staff Excellence Awards
Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the Staff Excellence Awards. Nominations are due Friday, Oct. 22, in the Human Resources office. Recipients will be announced at the December staff meeting. More information about the award and the nomination process, as well as the Google nomination form can be found here.

October staff meetings
Staff meetings will continue this week, on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. and Oct. 7 at 9 a.m., in Mott-Borlaug. Both meetings will cover new hires, sustainability, Title IX, the Process Improvement Project, and updates from the Faculty Organization Committee. Meeting dates for the year are posted on the Human Resources website.

Climate Survey

Staff members, please complete the Climate Survey by Oct. 6 if you have not already done so. You received a link to the survey in your email last week. If there are fewer than three responses in a department, the responses will not be disaggregated in order to protect respondents' confidentiality. Text responses will have themes shared by department, but not specific text, as an additional measure to protect confidentiality.

College Ministries

Decorah Pride
All Luther students, staff, and faculty are invited to join College Ministries and Luther PRIDE in marching in the Decorah Pride Parade on Saturday, Oct. 9. The parade steps off at 3 p.m. Find us at 2:45 p.m. near Mary Christopher Park. Pride-themed College Ministries t-shirts will be available in the College Ministries office next week for $10 each.

Collecting memories of 9/11

Brooke Joyce is interested in collecting short audio recordings of Luther community members' memories of 9/11. These will be woven into a concert of memorial music on Oct. 21. To participate in this project, send him an email <brooke.joyce>.

Take a survey for a chance to win Dining Dollars!

Dining Services is administering a customer satisfaction survey, asking students, faculty, and staff to provide feedback about their campus dining experiences. The results of this survey will help Dining Services implement changes to improve customer experience. We’d like to check in to see how we’re doing! Please take a few minutes to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey. Survey participants will be entered to win $50 dining dollars. The survey will close on Saturday, Oct. 16.

'Welcome' clings available to offices and departments

The Alumni Office has window clings featuring a welcome message for alumni, parents, families, and students (you may have seen these in the windows of many Decorah businesses). If you'd like a cling (or two) to display in your office or department, email Mariah Smith, director of parent and family engagement <smithmar>. These would be nice to have all over campus as we host more reunions in October!

Christmas at Luther tickets for employees

Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, Luther College faculty, staff, and emeriti may log in to tickets.luther.edu to select two free tickets to the Christmas at Luther performance of your choice along with the option to purchase two more for $35 each. An email will be sent on Wednesday containing the promo codes you will need. More information can be found on the Christmas at Luther website.

Not Quite Free Lunch Oct. 12

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu includes Caprese Biggie Sandwich, roasted Caesar vegetable wrap, creamy coleslaw, Italian pasta salad, creamy turkey and wild rice soup, dessert and beverage.The charge is only $5, payable by cash, check or Luther ID. Help spread the word: fall career fair Oct. 7

The Career Center is excited to announce that the fall career fair will be held in person 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in Peace Dining Room. This is a great opportunity for students to visit with employers about internships, full-time and volunteer positions. Encourage your students to join us on October 7. Explore the list of employers. Title IX Suppression Clause Policy Update

In response to recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, Luther revised its Title IX Policy to comply with a recent court decision supported by OCR. This revision removes the language from the 2020 regulations that require parties (including witnesses) to attend a hearing and participate in live, oral, and direct cross-examination in order for their statement/evidence to be considered. The full updated policy with the revised language is found on Section 27 of the Title IX Policy, under “Refusal to Submit to Cross-examination and Inferences.” If you have any questions or would like more information, contact Kasey Nikkel, Title IX Coordinator, <kasey.nikkel> or call 387-1825.

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist weekly on Mondays for $30/20 minutes or $40/30 minutes chair massages (cost includes tip and is payable by cash, check or card at appointment or when booking), which can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety, and enhance immune system function. Chair massage is done on a chair designed for massaging the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. Massages are done fully clothed. Sign up for a 20 or 30 minute session. New location: Union 102.

EVENTS

Chapel this week

The fall chapel theme to begin the 2021-22 academic year is: "A New Creation." This theme, grounded in Isaiah 65: 17-18, invites us to reflect on God's work in continually making all things new. Monday chapels will be Sung Morning Prayer, a liturgy written by Marty Haugen '73, and led by campus organist Gregory Peterson. Wednesday and Friday chapels will include music, prayer, and reflections from a variety of speakers, such as: senior students, faculty, staff, and our new campus pastor and director of College Ministries, Pastor Melissa Bills. All chapels begin at 10:30 a.m. and take place in the CFL Main Hall unless noted otherwise.

'Here's My Story: Neurodiversity on Campus' Oct. 6

"Neurodiversity" refers to variations in the way the brain functions, and is becoming an important area of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion work. Counseling Service and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invite all community members to a panel discussion on neurodiversity at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the CRH. Luther students and employees with brain-based differences such as Autism, ADHD, OCD, learning disabilities, etc., will share their experiences and discuss the joys and challenges of living in a society that doesn't always accommodate all brain types.

Decorah Pride festival Oct. 7-9

Decorah Pride announces that the Pride festival and parade will take place in Decorah starting on Thursday, Oct. 7, through Saturday, Oct. 9. Decorah Pride is open to all who are part of, or supporters of, the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer-identifying) community. Because there will be a large number of people gathering close together, the Pride committee requests that masks be worn, even for outdoor events. For a list of events, visit decorahpride.org.

A CEPE and Civic Sustainability Event: Jillian Peterson, “The Violence Project: How to Stop a Mass Shooting Epidemic,” Oct. 13

Hamline University professor of criminology and criminal justice, Jillian Peterson, will discuss her research into mass shootings and those who perpetrate them. With her colleague, James Densley, Peterson has spent years identifying commonalities in the life stories of mass shooters, and in her new book, calls for evidence-based strategies to stop these recurring tragedies. Peterson’s lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. A book sale and signing will take place following the lecture. Please email <cepe> if you have questions.

Position openings

Director of music marketing (1.0 FTE): The Director of Music Marketing develops and promotes a variety of special events to recruit students and garner visibility for the college and the exceptional Luther College Music Department. These events include the storied annual Christmas at Luther performances, domestic and international music tours, and a suite of Dorian Music Festivals and Summer Music Camps. A bachelor's degree and experience coordinating programs or events is required, and 3-4 years music or arts management experience is preferred. This position is open only to internal applicants.

Institutional Research Analyst (.75 FTE): 30-hours per week, benefit-eligible. This position is responsible for a broad range of activities involving data collection, analysis, and reporting in academic and administrative areas. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in a research-related field with strong quantitative data analysis training preferred. 

Maintenance Mechanic/Electrician (1.0 FTE): Position will perform all types of building maintenance and repair. Most work will be related to the various electrical systems on campus from three phase primary voltages to low voltage control systems. Work will meet the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) standards. High school diploma and a State of Iowa electrical license required. Preference given to a journeyman's license. Four years of formal working experience in installation and repair of electrical systems, a valid driver's license and computer skills to access web-based work order system are also required.

Registered Nurse (0.75 FTE, benefit eligible): Primary responsibilities include; holistic, culturally sensitive patient focused primary nursing care, systematic assessment and triage of acute and chronic health concerns, mental health assessment, provision of care for minor injuries, and collection of laboratory diagnostic data. Qualified applicants will have graduated from an accredited nursing school and have a current license to practice in Iowa. Bachelor of Science degree in nursing preferred. Associate degree in nursing accepted.
