ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Rev. John and Barbara Melin Professorship in International Studies

A generous gift from John ’70 and Barbara Melin will be used to establish the Rev. John and Barbara Melin Professorship in International Studies at Luther College. In recognition of Luther’s mission and quality of the international studies program and the dedicated faculty members who are a part of it, the Melins have funded the professorship with a planned estate gift of $750,000. In addition to underwriting a portion of the professor’s salary, the fund will support student/faculty research projects, travel for professional reasons, and activities to enhance knowledge, ability to teach, and reputation in the discipline. The recipient will be selected by recommendation from Luther’s provost and appointed by the president and will be a member of the international studies faculty. 

Being Community updates

Asymptomatic COVID Testing for All Students, Faculty, and Staff
Luther’s EAST (Expanded Asymptomatic Surveillance Testing) will be open to all students, faculty, and staff on Tuesdays at 1-4:30 p.m. Appointments are required and can be booked online, up to 12 hours in advance. On the appointment website, look for “Asymptomatic COVID Testing for Luther Community Members.” Anyone being tested must have no COVID symptoms and should be feeling healthy at the time of their appointment. This testing service is free of charge. Masks are required at the testing site, located at 404 High St.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

December staff meeting

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 9–10:30 a.m. in Peace Dining Room. The December all staff meeting will begin with the announcement of the 2021 Staff Excellence Award recipients. The remainder of the meeting will be centered around holiday festivities that will be filled with joy, smiles, laughter, and good food.

The Torgersen Center for Nordic Studies and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invite all faculty and staff to a social hour on Friday, Nov. 12, from 4-6 p.m. in Peace Dining Room in the Union. There will be chips and a cash bar, with the first drink on us!

Calling all nominations for student members on the new Student Title IX Advisory Group!

The purpose of the Luther College Student Title IX Advisory Group is to meet with the Title IX Coordinator (and at times team members) to review and provide feedback on relevant policies, interim supportive measures, education/prevention, and other relevant student concerns related to sexual misconduct. The Title IX office believes strongly in continual improvement and wants to hear the concerns of our students and the Luther community. The Student Title IX Advisory Group will not be part of any grievance process associated with the college. The group will meet every other month. Nominate a student!

Green Dot Employee Workshop

Join us Tuesday, Nov. 9, from 9:35-10:50 a.m. in Mott Room in the Union for a Green Dot Workshop. Green Dot is a bystander intervention program that gives employees the tools and resources to measurably reduce interpersonal violence. The Green Dot Workshop for faculty and staff introduces the basic elements of Green Dot, focusing specifically on the vital role college employees play in establishing and reinforcing campus culture. Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Philanthropy Week Nov. 8-12

The Student Philanthropy Council and Development Office will host Philanthropy Week in the Union, Nov. 8-12 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day! Please encourage students to stop by and share how scholarships impact their Luther experience. Students will be invited to write thank you notes to donors and they’ll walk away with tasty treats and a chance to win a Nintendo Switch Lite or a basket of game night goodies! Help available: Speech and Debate Center

Do you know of a student working on a class presentation? Do they need help narrowing down a topic or general feedback on content? Maybe they are hoping to improve their eye contact, movement, and overall poise. The Speech and Debate Center, sponsored by the communication studies department, is open 7-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday (120 Preus Library). Schedule an appointment here.

SAC Christmas Cheer 2021

Though it’s hard to believe, the Christmas season will soon be upon us, and we are looking forward to spreading some holiday cheer around Decorah and other communities in northeast Iowa. Nov. 8 is National First Generation Appreciation Day so Catalyze will be sharing first gen success stories during the week of November 8-12 to celebrate. There will be Instagram posts and a poster outside our office that students can stop and read. This form is open to all first generation students (current and past). Share your story!

Decorah Masters Swim Team

Looking to add structure and fun to your swim fitness regime? Consider joining Luther coworkers and community members on the Decorah Masters Swim team. The team is open to anyone who can comfortably 25 yards. Contact <ellika03> or <aaron.zander> for more information including practice times and fees.  

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist weekly on the first and third Mondays of the month. Prices are $30 for 20 minutes or $40 for 30 minutes chair massages (cost includes tip and is payable by cash, check, or card at appointment or when booking). Massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety, and enhance immune system function. Chair massage is done on a chair designed for massaging the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. Massages are done fully clothed. Sign up for a 20 or 30 minute session. New location: Union 102.

Open enrollment period Nov. 4-19
The open enrollment period for 2022 group benefit plans is Nov. 4–Nov.19. You should have/or will receive an email with important open enrollment information along with a link to the virtual open enrollment meetings. In-person informational sessions will be held in Peace Dining Room on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 5, at 9:15 a.m. A Zoom session will also be held Monday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. Login information for the Zoom meeting is in the email and included in the letter attached to the email. A recording of the Zoom meeting will also be available on the HR website after Nov. 12.

November Book Club "Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again"
For all who are curious, wondering, skeptical, or even cynical about the Bible—you are invited to join College Ministries in reading the book "Inspired" by Rachel Held Evans, a book about encountering the Bible on its own terms, not as a magic book, but as something far more captivating and confounding. We'll meet for conversation Tuesday evenings in November (time/location TBD). Copies of the book are available in the College Ministries Office for $10. Chapel this week

The November chapel theme is "Awake and Greet the New Morn." Psalm 108 says, "My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make melody. Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn...Your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds." As you watch the seasons change, may the daily steadfast cycle of light rising and light setting reconnect us with God’s promises of life, peace, and love, dawning anew each day.

Paideia Texts and Issues panel Nov. 2

“Decolonized Approaches to Teaching Religious Studies," is the second Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture of the 2021-22 series Decolonizing Paideia? Revising the Products and Processes of Education. Religion department faculty members Todd Green, Robert Shedinger, and Wanda Deifelt and students Dominique Stringer ‘22 and Nora Nyi Myint ‘22 will consider avenues for the ongoing work that decolonizing approaches demand within the religion classroom and at Luther College more broadly. Join at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the CFL Recital Hall.

Poetry Reading: Patrick Cabello Hansel Nov. 4

Patrick Cabello Hansel will give a poetry reading on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. He will also speak at Weekday Chapel in the CFL on Friday, Nov 5. Both events are open to the public. Patrick Cabello Hansel is a poet and retired Lutheran pastor of dual-language parishes in New York City, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis. His first book of poems, "The Devouring Land," focuses on the lives of recent immigrants to the US. His second poetry book, "Quitting Time," narrates his father’s life during the Great Depression, World War II, and other events of mid-20th century America. CSS: Cantus Nov. 6

The highly acclaimed men's vocal ensemble Cantus will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Known for their trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming, and engaging repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century, audience members will leave the performance mesmerized. Retirement

Donna Ryant, who has worked for Luther for more than 41 years, has announced her retirement effective Dec. 22. We congratulate and thank Donna for her dedicated service to the college.   

Position openings

Director of disability services (1.0 FTE): The director of disability services takes an active role in managing all aspects of the department and provides leadership across the college with respect to disability and accessibility in areas such as but not limited to: Disability Services' resource coordination; educational offerings; training; disability equity and inclusion framing; assessment; innovation; practice, process, and resource development to address access in all environments. A bachelor's degree and at least two years experience in disability services is required.

Associate director of music marketing (1.0 FTE): The associate director is a member of the music marketing team, whose purpose is to develop and promote a variety of special events and strategies to recruit students and garner visibility for the college and the exceptional Luther College Music Department. Four-year college degree is required along with at least three years experience in music or art management and experience with Google Workspace and program or event coordination.

Maintenance mechanic/electrician (1.0 FTE): This person will perform all types of building maintenance and repair. Most work will be related to the various electrical systems on campus from three phase primary voltages to low voltage control systems. Work will meet the NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) standards. High School Diploma and a State of Iowa electrical license required. Preference given to a journeyman’s license. Four years of formal working experience in installation and repair of electrical systems, a valid driver’s license and computer skills to access web-based work order system are also required.  

Welcome Center attendant (1.0 FTE): This person will deliver information to students, staff, and visitors by phone and in person at the front desk in the Union. Attendants serve as ambassadors of Luther College and serve as clerical support for Safety and Security. Duties will include registration information data entry, serve as dispatch for safety and security, and key card access programming. High school diploma or equivalent and basic computer and clerical skills required. Some college is preferred.

Workstation support specialist (1.0 FTE): Will participate on the User Services and Workstation Support teams within Information Technology Services (ITS) to support, maintain, monitor, update, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computer systems, software, and applications. Bachelor's degree is required along with skill and experience using and troubleshooting standard operating systems, productivity suites, printing, and audio visual/equipment. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills are also required.

Daylight Saving Time concludes at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, when the clock will “fall back” one hour and in theory we get one extra hour of sleep or one more hour to do more of what you enjoy. Check out this post for some inspiration on what you can do with that time.
