Save the Date: Luther College Holiday Party, Thursday, Dec. 16, 3-6 p.m. in the Union

President Ward and the Board of Regents would like to invite all Luther employees to the (almost) annual Christmas Party. Covid protocols will determine the size and scope of the party but we look forward to celebrating with you in any way we can. More details to come at the beginning of December.

Being Community updates

Alert Level 1 Green
Luther College remains in Level 1 Green from Level 0 Blue. Face masks are required in classrooms, laboratories, and studios, as well as during individual appointments with students in enclosed, personal faculty and staff offices. The residence halls are now at Phase 3 of the guest/visitor policy. View additional details here.

President Ward hosts office hours

In an effort to stay connected with faculty and staff, and provide opportunities for discussion, President Ward will host a series of office hours. Attendance is limited to eight people per session due to the size of the meeting space. Sign up with Tara Quass, exec. asst. to the Office of the President, <quasta01>. One Team Day: Supporting student athletes Nov. 18

Mark your calendars for Luther's One Team Day, an all-day fundraising event in support of Luther's student athletes: 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021. With $85,000+ available in dollar-for-dollar matches, your support of our student athletes and/or individual sport programs will be doubled throughout the day (while funds are available). Form your own book group

The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites you to form your own book group. Identify a book that would challenge your thinking on a critical issue, invite a few others to join you, and sign up. No plastic bags in recycling please

Norse recyclers, please do not put any plastic bags, plastic sheeting, Amazon plastic envelopes, or bubble wrap in any recycling container on campus. Our local recycling program does not accept these, and they gum up their equipment. Thanks for reading signs on recycling containers, and practicing helpful recycling! Questions? Luther Works November support session

At 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Mott. Luther Works is giving FREE JOURNALS with CAREER DEVELOPMENT resources to supervisors that attend our next Support Session (plus extras to gift their upperclassmen student workers). Miriam Skrade and Megan Grimm '22 will share 20 self-guided career development opportunities that student workers can work on toward their career and life development between other department specific tasks and projects. Safe Zone training

Become an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ population by attending Safe Zone training! Safe Zone training is an opportunity to learn about LGBTQIA+ identities, gender and sexuality, and examine prejudice and assumptions. After, you will receive a Safe Zone Trained sign to communicate to others that you are supportive of LGBTQIA+ individuals. HR Open Enrollment Update – Final Reminder
Open enrollment to enroll in or make changes to health and dental plan elections. You do not need to do anything if you plan to remain on the current health and/or dental plan election. You must complete a Flexible Benefit 2022 Enrollment Form if you plan to participate in the health and/or dependent care flex plan(s) for 2022. Forms are available on the HR website. The recording of the Nov. 8 virtual open enrollment is also available. All forms must be turned into HR by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19.

November Book Club "Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again"
For all who are curious, wondering, skeptical, or even cynical about the Bible - you are invited to join College Ministries in reading the book "Inspired" by Rachel Held Evans, a book about encountering the Bible on its own terms, not as a magic book, but as something far more captivating and confounding. Join us for the remaining 2 dates for discussion: Tuesday, Nov. 16, and Monday, Nov. 22.  Discussions take place at 7 p.m. in the Aisle 1 lounge in the CFL (outside of the College Ministries office) with warm beverages provided. Council for Faith and Life: Call for nominations
The Office of College Ministries and the religion department are asking faculty and staff to nominate students to a newly-forming Council for Faith and Life. This council will be responsible for overseeing the role of faith in campus life and for building and maintaining collaborative relationships across departments, faith traditions, and the wider community. The November chapel theme is "Awake and Greet the New Morn." Psalm 108 says, "My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make melody. Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn...Your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds." As you watch the seasons change, may the daily steadfast cycle of light rising and light setting reconnect us with God’s promises of life, peace, and love, dawning anew each day.

Polarizing Populism in Latin America Nov. 16

Based on his book project, Orçun Selçuk will present "Polarizing Populism in Latin America" on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. With a particular focus on the Venezuelan and Ecuadorian experience, Selçuk explores the ways populist leaders undermine democracy by polarizing the political environment between their supporters and opponents, not only in Latin America but in Europe, the United States, and the rest of the world. Oneota Film Festival Film Screening "MISSION: JOY" Nov. 19

Oneota Film Festival will screen "MISSION: JOY" featuring His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishhop Desmond Tutu sharing their wisdom and the science of Happiness, on Friday, Nov. 19, at T-Bock’s upstairs. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the 90 min. film beginning at 7 p.m. Cash bar and Pinter’s popcorn will be served at this membership event to make the 2022 festival on March 3-6 in downtown Decorah admission-free.

Fall Opera Scenes Nov. 19 and 20

The Luther College Music Department presents Fall Opera Scenes this Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. Fall Opera Scenes is a compilation of scenes from several different operas presented in one evening. The 2021 Fall Opera Scenes are co-directed by Deborah Gover, Ed Anderek, and Nicholas Shaneyfelt. The event is free of charge and will take place in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson Noble Hall of Music.

Position openings

Accountant and risk manager (1.0 FTE): Will apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Financial Account Standards guidelines in executing, analyzing, verifying, and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a business-related field and at least one year of relevant experience in accounting and/or risk management required. 

Accounting assistant (1.0 FTE): Will perform bookkeeping duties which include preparation of general ledger entries and various monthly reports, processing batches/invoices for daily disbursements, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts. Associate’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience and understanding of a general ledger system is required. Two or more years of bookkeeping experience preferred. 

Union lead custodian (1.0 FTE): Will utilize their strengths to interact with students, faculty, staff, and guests to the college. Hours will typically be from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. High School diploma, at least three years direct experience in custodial work, basic computer knowledge, and ability to lead and manage others required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Robert Christman’s book, "The Dynamics of the Early Reformation in their Reformed Augustinian Context" (Amsterdam University Press, 2020), received the Gerald Strauss Book Prize, which recognizes the best book published in English during the preceding year in the field of German Reformation history. The prize was awarded on Oct. 29 at the annual meeting of the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in San Diego, CA.

Kate Narveson served as respondent for a session on new approaches to the early modern women's archive, presented on Oct. 29 at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in San Diego, CA.
