Being Community updates

New EAST testing hours
Starting this week, the schedule at Luther's EAST (Expanded Asymptomatic Surveillance Testing) is changing. Faculty, staff, and students are able to receive COVID tests on Wednesdays from 8:45 a.m. to 12 p.m., instead of on Tuesday afternoons. Anyone being tested must have no COVID symptoms and should be feeling healthy at the time of their appointment. Appointments are required and can be booked online, up to 12 hours in advance.

Alert Level 1 Green
Luther College remains in Level 1 Green from Level 0 Blue. Face masks are required in classrooms, laboratories, and studios, as well as during individual appointments with students in enclosed, personal faculty and staff offices. The residence halls are now at Phase 3 of the guest/visitor policy. View additional details here.

Staff Christmas Party

The December staff meeting is right around the corner! Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 9 - 10:30 a.m. As usual, the December meeting is our annual Staff Christmas and Holiday Party. There will be special drinks and treats, President Ward will announce the 2021 Staff Excellence recipients, holiday singing, and the traditional games! We hope all will come and enjoy the party if you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other end of the year festival. We encourage all supervisors and employees to spread good cheer about this spirit-lifting event.

Christmas at Luther tickets still available

It's not too late to reserve a ticket to attend Christmas at Luther 2021! Performances begin Thursday, Dec. 2, and occur daily through Sunday, Dec. 5. Tickets are free for Luther students not performing. Current faculty/staff/emeriti may request up to 2 seats at no charge. Select your seats by visiting tickets.luther.edu or stop by the Ticket Office in the lobby of the CFL. To promote the safety of our community, patrons are required to wear masks in the CFL Main Hall.

One Team Giving Day was a win - Thank you!

Luther hosted its second annual One Team Giving Day on Thursday, Nov. 18. The campaign raised more than $329,000 from 1,890 donors to support student-athletes, exceeding the college’s $250,000 goal.  “It was such an exciting day for coaches and student-athletes of the Luther College Athletics programs!” said Renae Hartl, director of intercollegiate athletics. “I want to say thank you to everyone who supported and participated in the day through their messages and donations. We want our coaches to be able to create competitive schedules and provide cutting-edge training equipment for our student-athletes. The outcome of this day ensures that we can do so.”

Fall Science Research Poster Symposium returns!

After a year hiatus, the annual Luther College Fall Science Research Symposium returns at 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Sampson-Hoffland Atrium, Valders Concourse, and Valders Nursing Hallway. Highlighting undergraduate student research, this symposium includes poster presentations from students in biology, chemistry, data science, environmental studies, mathematics, and nursing. Project topics include applied statistics, microbiology, entomology, machine learning, soils, and GIS among others.

Not Quite Free Lunch

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu includes meatloaf, gravy, cheddar scalloped potatoes, steamed broccoli, dessert, and beverage. The charge is only $5, payable by cash, check, or Luther ID. Compost collection closed Dec. 10

Campus collection of compost will close on Friday, Dec. 10. Compost collection will resume on Monday, Jan. 3. For questions, or if you would like a personal compost container for your office, contact <sustainability>.

Email and Google Workspace usage

ITS and the Alumni Office have communicated with alumni who graduated before 2019 and who have luther.edu email accounts about the discontinuation of those accounts as of Dec. 1, 2022. This is happening because Google has announced that colleges and universities will no longer have unlimited file storage. Luther’s institutional file storage needs to be reserved for current students, faculty, and staff, for educational and business purposes. ITS and HR remind all employees that email accounts and assigned computer equipment are primarily for Luther-related work. If you don’t already have a personal email account, please create one. Personal files should be stored on personally owned devices or within personally owned accounts. The Technology Help Desk has created a web page with guidance on how to be a good steward of Google Apps accounts.

Christmas at Luther parking restrictions 2021

In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for Christmas at Luther the following parking restrictions will go into effect starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1. These restrictions will remain in effect until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5, at which time we will return to the usual lot designations.

The general parking areas of the library, Jenson-Noble, and city pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students are to move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the Jenson-Noble, library, and Sampson Hoffland lots provided they move by 5:30 p.m. on that Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday unless attending the performance. Exception – Vehicles displaying a Commuter, Baker, or College Apartment sticker may park in the gravel city pool lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Faculty/Staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for handicapped parking. Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate, Regents Center, and Farwell lots.

Starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 5, the lots on the east and west side of the CFL will be designated for handicapped parking only. Your cooperation with these changes will be appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fine.

J-Term and Spring KATIE courses now available

Your J-Term and 2022SP KATIE courses are now available. To see these courses, change the filter in the Course Overview block on your Dashboard to "Future." If you would like to have multiple sections combined into a single metacourse, request it now by contacting the Technology Help Desk at 387-1000, <helpdesk>, or visit help.luther.edu.

Christmas at the Book Shop
Have Christmas shopping to do? The Book Shop will be open Thursday until 5:30 p.m., Friday until 9:30 p.m., Saturday 10-7:30 p.m., and Sunday 10-2:30 p.m.. On Saturday from 11-1, join sisters Karen Brunssen and Martha Nielsen as they promote their mother, Ann Urness Gesme's, book "Norwegian Emigration: Between Rocks and Hard Places." The 2021 Christmas at Luther ornament is also available.

College Ministries

Celebrate Advent - pick up an Advent kit!
Advent is the season of waiting prior to Christmas. This four-week season begins Nov. 28. College Ministries wants to help you mark this sacred time. Pick up an Advent kit outside the College Ministries office (CFL) that contains: Battery-powered Advent candles, a Heaven and Nature Sing devotional book, coloring pages, hot chocolate and cider packets, and a button that reminds you to awaken hope, peace, love, and joy this season.

Jazz lessons and carols: Call for readers
College Ministries is excited to host a jazz service of lessons and carols during Christmas at Luther weekend, Sunday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. We are looking for volunteers to help read lessons during this service. If you are interested, please email <ministry>.

Chair massage

Wellness is hosting a massage therapist weekly on the first and third Mondays of the month. Prices are $30 for 20 minutes or $40 for 30 minutes chair massages (cost includes tip and is payable by cash, check, or card at appointment or when booking). Massage can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety, and enhance immune system function. Chair massage is done on a chair designed for massaging the back, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. Massages are done fully clothed. Sign up for a 20 or 30 minute session. New location: Union 102. Inside the Student Organizations Suite.

Position openings

Bookshop Clothing Buyer (1.0 FTE): The buyer performs various duties in the day-to-day running of the bookstore. This includes sales forecasting, purchasing, establishing ship dates, artwork approval and revisions, receiving merchandise and invoicing. High School education and retail experience is required. Exceptional customer service and communication skills are vital. Must be a self-starter and have knowledge of clothing trend research and on-going marketing research.  

Brandt Hall lead custodian (1.0 FTE): This position has the opportunity to interact heavily with our students on a daily basis in their common living areas, hallways, lounges, etc. They will help support student life as well as events on campus. As a lead position, this person will provide guidance and organization to other teammates in the building. Hours will typically be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. High school diploma and/or equivalent preferred, but not required. 

Residence hall custodian (1.0 FTE): This position has the opportunity to interact heavily with our students on a daily basis in their common living areas, hallways, lounges, etc. They will help support student life as well as events on campus. This role will primarily be responsible for ensuring clean and sanitary conditions for common student residential spaces. Hours will typically be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. High school diploma and/or equivalent preferred, but not required.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Gereon Kopf presented "Philosophy/Thought of Religion/Self-cultivation" as well as "Teaching Philosophy of Religion Inclusively to Diverse Students" and organized/led a workshop funded by a grant from the Wabash Center at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion.

Wanda Deifelt presented an online lecture titled "Violencias de Género: Discursos Religiosos, Violencia Simbólica (Gender Violence: Religious Discourse, Symbolic Violence)" at the III International Congress of Gender and Religion, on Nov. 18, and a paper at the American Academy of Religion in San Antonio on "Decolonizing Lutheran Diaconia," for the Martin Luther and Global Lutheran Traditions section on Nov. 20.

Abigail Miller '22 and Kirk Larsen attended the Entomological Society of America national meetings in Denver, CO, in early November and gave a presentation titled "Bumble Bees and Honey Bees of Tallgrass Prairies in Winneshiek County, Iowa: Survey Transect Length Affects Species Richness." This presentation summarized findings from their summer 2020 collaborative student-faculty research project.
