Andy Hageman named director of the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement 

Andy Hageman has been named the new director of the CEPE at Luther College. He will begin his five-year term in February 2022.

“The CEPE is a portal through which Luther students, faculty, and staff can share their innovative and interdisciplinary work with broader communities. At the heart of my own work is embracing the entanglement of different disciplines. I see the center as a way to connect projects and pursuits--a space where scholars in English, environmental studies, and data science, for example, design projects together. Likewise, the center will provide students opportunities to connect their academic work to the paths they will move along after graduation,” said Hageman.

Being Community updates

On campus vaccine clinic
On Thursday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Winneshiek County Public Health will have a COVID vaccine clinic in the Student Organization Suite (Union, first floor). It is open to all Luther students, faculty, and staff. Moderna, Pfizer, and J&J boosters as well as initial vaccines will be available. There is no advance sign-up. It is a first come, first served clinic. Bring your COVID vaccination card and face mask, as they will be required. You may also call (563) 382-4848 to schedule an appointment for a different time.

COVID-19 antigen testing at EAST
Testing is available for employees and students at EAST on Dec. 8, 14, and 16 from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Anyone being tested must have no COVID symptoms and should be feeling healthy at the time of their appointment. Appointments are required and can be booked online, up to 12 hours in advance. On the appointment website, look for "Asymptomatic COVID Testing for Luther Community Members." This testing service is free of charge. Masks are required at the testing site, located at 404 High St. If you are planning on using this test to travel, please verify that antigen tests will be accepted for your flight.

Alert Level 1 Green
Luther College remains in Level 1 Green from Level 0 Blue. Face masks are required in classrooms, laboratories, and studios, as well as during individual appointments with students in enclosed, personal faculty and staff offices. The residence halls are now at Phase 3 of the guest/visitor policy. View additional details here.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Luther College Holiday Party scheduled for Dec. 16

The Luther College holiday party is scheduled for Dec. 16 from 3-6 p.m. in Dahl Centennial Union. Look for an announcement on Dec. 10 regarding the status of the party. If the COVID-19 Alert Level is Blue, we will gather as planned for employees and their guests (including children). If the Alert Level is Green, we will gather without guests. If the Alert Level is Teal, we will postpone the party until after the holiday break.

Christmas at Luther on demand tickets

If you weren't able to attend a spectacular Christmas at Luther performance, don't fear! On demand tickets are available. From the time of purchase, you have 72 hours to view the on demand video as many times as you wish. If you pre-order, your 72 hour window begins at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The final purchase date for On Demand tickets is Dec. 23. The performance shown on demand is the Sunday livestream.

Campus Programming and College Ministries invite faculty and staff to a social hour on Friday, Dec. 10, from 4-6 p.m. at Pulpit Rock Brewery. We'll have snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and a cash bar, with the first drink on us. Come celebrate the last day of the semester!

Library books are due

Dec. 10 is the due date for books checked out from the Main Stacks by faculty and staff on or before Dec. 5. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by e-mailing <library>. Once renewed, the new due date is May 13, the last day of classes for the spring semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." View your account online by clicking on "Library Account."

Ultra Mega Mega! You're invited

The entire Luther community is invited to the Center for the Arts for the student art open house Ultra Mega Mega on Friday, Dec. 10 from 6-9 p.m. Featuring artworks and performances from courses across the visual and performing arts department. Walk-ins are welcome. Please stop in and enjoy the music, snacks, prizes, and the art of course! Raffle signup begins at 6 p.m. with a prize drawing at 7:30 p.m.

Employee yoga class

An employee yoga class will be starting Jan. 10 with Molly Gallagher as the instructor. Class will be held on Mondays from 1:30-2:15 p.m. for the four weeks of J-term. Wellness will subsidize the total fee so your cost is a mere $20! Sign up soon as this is a great opportunity for all current employees and their spouses.

Fall Science Research Poster Symposium returns!

After a year hiatus, the annual Luther College Fall Science Research Symposium returns at 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Sampson-Hoffland Atrium, Valders Concourse, and Valders Nursing Hallway. Highlighting undergraduate student research, this symposium includes poster presentations from students in biology, chemistry, data science, environmental studies, mathematics, and nursing. Project topics include applied statistics, microbiology, entomology, machine learning, soils, and GIS among others.

Not Quite Free Lunch

Join colleagues at the Not Quite Free Lunch 11:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, in the Peace Dining Room, sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. The menu includes meatloaf, gravy, cheddar scalloped potatoes, steamed broccoli, dessert, and beverage. The charge is only $5, payable by cash, check, or Luther ID. Compost collection closed Dec. 10

Campus collection of compost will close on Friday, Dec. 10. Compost collection will resume on Monday, Jan. 3. For questions, or if you would like a personal compost container for your office, contact <sustainability>.

Email and Google Workspace usage

ITS and the Alumni Office have communicated with alumni who graduated before 2019 and who have luther.edu email accounts about the discontinuation of those accounts as of Dec. 1, 2022. This is happening because Google has announced that colleges and universities will no longer have unlimited file storage. Luther’s institutional file storage needs to be reserved for current students, faculty, and staff, for educational and business purposes. ITS and HR remind all employees that email accounts and assigned computer equipment are primarily for Luther-related work. If you don’t already have a personal email account, please create one. Personal files should be stored on personally owned devices or within personally owned accounts. The Technology Help Desk has created a web page with guidance on how to be a good steward of Google Apps accounts.

HR update

Employees can apply to have a chosen name, gender, and pronouns used in the information systems at Luther College. Employees need to complete a Chosen Name Application at the HR office. The Luther College chosen name is public and should not be considered a "private" name for use at the college only. The Employee Chosen Name, Selection of Gender Identity and Preferred Pronouns Policy is available on the luther.edu website.

Book Shop news

The Book Shop has copies of the book "Norwegian Emigration, Between Rocks and Hard Places" by Ann Urness Gesme, this is a book of traditions, customs, and conditions in Norway during the 1800s emigration to America. The author's daughters were in the Book Shop on Saturday, Dec. 4, promoting their mother's work. 

College Ministries

Candlelight worship
College Ministries invites all students, staff and faculty to a candlelight service of readings and carols at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, in the CFL Main Hall. Enjoy a night of carols, readings and calm before finals week. Dress comfortably for the event and bring blankets and pillows for comfortable seating on the stage. Join us for hot chocolate and cookies following worship.

Advent candlelight prayer walks
Join Pastor Melissa for (battery) candle-lit prayer walks on Wednesdays, Dec. 1, 8, and 15 at 4:30 p.m. Meet in the CFL lobby to share an opening song and prayer prompt, before walking an introspective loop around campus with your candle. Bundle up to walk outside (in case of severe weather, we'll walk inside the CFL instead). All students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

Kwanzaa Chapel
College Ministries and the Black Student Union invite you to chapel for a special Kwanzaa celebration. We will light candles and reflect on the seven Kwanzaa principles, encouraged to live for the well-being of the world, and ourselves within it on December 10, 2021 from 10:30-10:50 a.m. in the main hall.
