Second Life presents rich opportunities for collaboration and participation unfettered by geographical constraints.  This conference will occur in the virtual reality world of “Second Life”.  Faculty and students from Luther College will meet with nursing students from affiliated ELCA schools of nursing to discuss transformative nursing care.

Due to generous support from Luther College, this conference is offered free of charge.  Registration is limited to 50 participants. Registration deadline is February 1, 2013.

Keynote Address - Jayme Nelson, RN, MS

The Keynote address:  "Who We Are and Where We're Going" will describe the Lutheran Deaconess History and the development of ELCA affiliated schools of nursing.  Technological innovations present opportunities for collaborative practice and education that transcend geographical limitations as well as physical limitations of participants.  The keynote address will describe our past as well as present myriad collaborative opportunities for the future of nursing, particularly with the disabled community.

Jayme Nelson (Jayme Xaris in Second Life) has been as associate professor of nursing at Luther College since 2000 and an RN for 25 years.   Her research interests include virtue ethics, technological innovations and informatics.  Professor Nelson's background includes work as an acute care nurse practitioner with impoverished undocumented immigrants as well as nursing practice in the transplantation operating room.

Breakout Sessions

Small group breakout sessions will facilitate discussion among participants on topics relevant to transformative nursing care.  In addition to discussion sessions, participants will receive guided field trips to innovative Second Life sites.  Participants will visit wildly imaginative Second Life sites ("Tour of the Testes" and the "Genome Project") that take advantage of the Second Life interface as well as sites that are maintained by world renowned "real life" facilities (American Cancer Society, Mayo Clinic).  Breakout sessions will be facilitated by Bridget Rouse and Michael Osmera, senior nursing students at Luther College.
