Luther Works / Work Study
At Luther College, work-study opportunities are available to all students through the Luther Works program. Luther Works will help you:
- Earn money to help pay for your tuition and/or have spending money while attending Luther
- Discover how every job is an opportunity to serve your community
- Actively learn through the professional, technical, and interpersonal dynamics of work-study roles
- Build values, skills, and character
When you graduate from Luther, you’ll possess both a college degree and the skills to make a difference in your workplace, your community, and the broader world.

Luther provides many opportunities to work in a variety of positions, including positions with increased responsibility and wages. Some of these positions are on campus and serve the Luther community, while others are off campus and serve the greater Decorah area community.
All work study positions are posted on the Handshake site. For assistance, use this tutorial for logging into Handshake and looking for open positions.
You must have federal work-study to participate in Off-Campus work-study positions. Before applying for an Off-Campus open position, you will need to verify that you have federal work-study by sending an email, or calling Student Employment at 563-387-1072.

Submit your W-4s securely online using this link. Do not email or postal mail this confidential information.
Your I-9 must be completed in person in our office located in bottom level of Main building. Your Direct Deposit form must be delivered to us in person.
Required
Federal I9 Form – This form is available on campus and must be completed before you can begin work on campus. Please see this list of acceptable ORIGINAL documents that must be presented to the Student Employment Office when completing this form.
Federal W-4 Form – necessary to calculate withholding for federal taxes.
Iowa W4 Form – necessary to calculate withholding for state taxes.
Direct Deposit of Wages – log onto Norse Hub and complete ‘Banking Information’ section. Required for receiving payroll wages. This tutorial will help in entering information.
Illinois Residents Only
Illinois W4 Form – necessary to calculate tax withholding for Illinois residents only.
Non-residence Iowa Tax Form – necessary for Illinois residents for tax reciprocity.
Optional
Work Study Payment Agreement – required if you plan to have earnings applied towards institutional charges.

How do I sign up for summer employment?
- Review the Student Summer Employment guidelines
- Complete the Intent to Work Summer Employment form to let us know you are interested in summer employment at Luther
- Fill out employment and Direct Deposit forms and bring them to the Student Employment Office (Main 25). If you are a Luther student who has worked in a work-study job this year, you have completed employment documents.
- Check out Handshake to find available summer employment positions. This tutorial will help you find Luther College Summer positions.
- Some summer positions are open to non-Luther applicants after on-campus students have been placed into positions. These positions and their supervisors are:

Every work study supervisor is a Luther Works Leader. As a student employee, you will have a Luther Works Leader that you will work alongside, some directly (in an office) and some in conjunction with (mentoring, dining services, custodial). These leaders challenge and support you to work to the best of your ability and facilitate your development through:
- Formal and informal mentoring to help you develop personal, interpersonal, and career readiness skills.
- Supervision which helps you fulfill the duties of a job and work towards excellence in all you do.
- Time for self-reflection and performance evaluation. You’ll look back on the impact of your work experience and identify opportunities for continued growth.
This team of Luther faculty, staff, and students serve Luther Works by providing oversight, collaborative leadership, resource development, and management of the Luther Works program.
