At a meeting of the Norwegian Synod at Washington Prairie Church on October 10, 1857, it was decided to establish an institution of higher learning with a Norwegian background in America. They first used Concordia Seminary in St. Louis (Missori Synod) as the foundation, having a professorship there until there was enough money to start the actual college.
