Dear Classmates,

I chatted with Elaine DeBuhr a couple of days ago, and it sent my mind into the memory bank. I talked to Cal shortly before he died twenty or thirty years ago. Cancer had a final grip on him. He told how his submarine had been ordered to observe the first atomic blast in the Pacific—Bikini Atoll, I believe. They were supposed to be a safe distance from any radiation problem. The officers were all top-side to observe, hence exposed. Cal said he was the sixth of the officers to be claimed by cancer, hardly happenstance.
