2014 Homecoming, Inauguration Ceremony

Class of 1955 Fall 2014 Letter

Fall 2014

Dear 1955 Classmates:

As I write this in northern Minnesota, we are still in a very mild, sunny, dry stretch with beautiful fall colors. It is very much like Homecoming at Luther in early October. I’m sure you recall fondly the colors in the Upper Iowa River valley. This year the weather provided a fine weekend, not only for many reunion classes, but also for the inauguration of Dr. Paula J. Carlson as the 10th president of the college. The Center for Faith and Life was at capacity for the ceremony, which included an oratorio by Nordic Choir and the Symphony Orchestra. The only downside was that the football team, having started the season 40 (including a win over St. Olaf), was stomped by Central, 477. But that is a small thing in the broad scheme. An unusual event at Homecoming was a library exhibit of several papyri found in the college archives, which were acquired by Dean Qualley in his graduate student days, while involved in archeological research in Egypt. The 2,000-year-old pieces were authenticated by experts at the University of Michigan, well-known for its archeology program.
