Class of 1965 Fall 2010 Letter

Fall 2010

Dear Classmate,

Homecoming 2010 was definitely a wonderful “coming home.” We were treated to:

  • The beauty of Decorah in its fall grandeur.
  • The beauty of Luther’s campus with the new Sampson Hoffland Laboratories and renovated Valders Hall of Science, the renovated Dahl Centennial Union, and the new Bentdahl Commons.
  • The beauty of accomplishment by our well-deserved classmates Karen (Mathews) Stuart and Bob Thompson. Karen received the Distinguished Service Award for her work as a block trader and member and seat holder on the New York Stock Exchange (being the first women to work as a trader on Wall Street) and for her continued support of Luther. Bob was inducted into Luther’s Athletic Hall of Fame for his storied football career at Luther and accomplished work life as a company owner and chemical dependency counselor. Both Karen and Bob have also given of themselves for their communities. We are so proud of both of you!
  • The beauty of reflection as Kent Finanger relived with us the gym fire our freshman year. We’re sure we all recalled our emotions of that evening in 1961.
  • The beauty of looking ahead in our own lives and in the life of Luther College. As we approach Luther’s sesquicentennial in 2011, we hope you consider a gift in gratitude for our “home” for four years.

As part of looking ahead, we thought it would be fun to hear about what you would put on your “bucket list.” As the years go by, you can let us know when you accomplish them. Write with or without your list; we’d love to hear from you.  Our contact information is listed below.

We are proud to represent you as your class agents. Our class has had wonderful class agents in the past and we realize we have big shoes to fill. We’ll do our best!

Go Norse,

PS. Our thoughts and prayers are with Karen (Nilsestuen) Peterson on the death of her husband, Deane ’64, on Oct. 20, 2010. He was with us at our reunion. He will be missed.

Prayers are also sent for the well being of the Luther football player, Christopher Norton, injured during Luther’s football game the week after homecoming.

Don't forget your Annual Fund giving!

Each year nearly 10,000 alumni, parents, and friends support the Annual Fund with gifts from $3 to $25,000. Strong support from alumni helps Luther secure significant funds from foundations and corporations, and your gift each year helps us reach our goal of 30% alumni giving to the Annual Fund.  Here’s how our class—and surrounding classes—did in 2009:

Class of 1964    Total giving in 2009:  $141,969 from 36% of the class

CLASS OF 1965            TOTAL GIVING IN 2009:  $52,187 FROM 37% OF THE CLASS

Class of 1966    Total giving in 2009:  $53,545 from 38% of the class

Your gift can boost our class impact on current students! Visit givenow.luther.edu or return the enclosed envelope with your gift to show your support. Thank you!

Wish I could have made it to the reunion; I am a friend of Karen's brother Ron. Though I didn't really know Karen when at Luther, it would be fun to make her acquaintance now. Yay, women on Wall Street!

Greetings to all my classmates.  I retired from the Iowa Department of Human Services as the department's rules coordinator after 35 years.  I then went to work as a tax professional for H&R Block and got my enrolled-agent license.  Last January I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and after two months in the hospital and hospice, I went home to die.  However, thanks to the wonderful care of my wife and my sister, and the prayers of all our family and friends, I am now able to get around with a walker after 8 months of being confined to bed, and my prognosis is much better.  I thank God every day for the extra time I have been given.
