Class of 2013 Fall Letter

Fall 2013

Dear Classmate,

Already five months have passed since Arne Sorenson ’80 made the call for us to “be bold” – and how time flies! Now we’ve entered the nondescript age of “college graduate,” placing us anywhere in the 20s decade. We lament knowing that we’ll probably never be with as many people our own age again. Like us, you are probably struggling to say that you “went” to Luther College, rather than you “go” to Luther College. It was such a strange feeling not returning to Luther this fall, but whatever path you have chosen, whether it be employment, a gap year, further education, an internship, etc., hopefully you are enjoying it to the fullest.

I (Clara) have the good fortune of remaining in Decorah for a ten-month AmeriCorps service term, working with five talented Luther graduates in the community I’ve grown to love. Being so close to campus, I was able to make it to Luther’s Homecoming weekend and - indeed - amazing things are at work. Interim President Tiede has excelled in driving a student-centered community, while the search to fill the presidency continues. I am proud to have graduated alongside President Rick and Judy Torgerson, knowing that the Luther story continues still. Hundreds of creative and eager students were welcomed to campus this fall. I know they, like us, will call Luther their second home.

We've been thinking about the upcoming Christmas at Luther tradition and what a lovely return to campus it will make for many of us. I (Jessie) just returned from an internship in France for the past couple of months. Though France was a great experience, it is a great feeling to be back in the states. I am already looking forward to Christmas at Luther and returning to Decorah, even if only for a weekend. I can’t wait to see the familiar sight of the wind turbine along the bluffs during the “home stretch” of my drive to Luther and the Christmas tree outside the union. Hopefully by that time Decorah will have some snow!

Since we don't all have the luxury of visiting Luther often, we're excited to share some news from the Luther College Archives. Now we have online access to some of our favorite collegiate publications - College Chips, the Pioneer, and the Agora. For those of us who already miss Luther, the online archives serve as an excellent resource filled with good memories and, of course, campus news.

We would like to thank each of you who made a pledge to support Luther through the Senior Giving Campaign. Every gift – no matter the amount – adds up in supporting living and learning at Luther College. Support from alumni is the most genuine measure of value in terms of collegiate institutions. For those of you who have not yet pledged, please do consider making a pledge to this institution that we all love! You may visit www.givenow.luther.edu to get started.

Happy fall - Soli deo Gloria!
