Class of 2017 Spring 2019 Letter

Spring 2019

Hello Class of 2017,

We hope you are all doing well and living your best life outside of the Luther bubble! Some major things have been happening on campus and we wanted to keep you in the loop.

As the class of 2019 celebrates Commencement on May 26, Luther will also bid farewell to President Paula Carlson - the tenth in the College’s history. Under her leadership, new programs were added in data science, neuroscience, visual communication and musical theatre; outdoor athletic facilities were renewed, including the baseball and softball stadiums, tennis courts and football field; and a new position was added for a Dean for Institutional Equity and Inclusion.

Luther Athletics has been celebrating victories both on and off the field lately. Retired Track and Field Coach, Jeff Wettach ’79, was named the recipient of the Bob Frederick Sportsmanship Award, the highest recognition of sportsmanship awarded by the NCAA. The football team also completed another season on the new blue turf! They won their first home game on October 13 against Buena Vista. Go Norse!

Despite some snowy weather and slippery roads, Christmas at Luther kicked off the holiday season on November 29 to December 2 and brought hundreds of visitors and alumni back to campus. All choirs were outfitted with new robes, and Aurora and Norsemen changed from their former black dresses and tuxes respectively to black robes. Collegiate Chorale and Cathedral Choir have just returned from tours of the Midwest, and Jazz Orchestra sets out April 12 for a tour that includes South Dakota and Minnesota. On top of that, Nordic Choir will sing with the Des Moines Symphony on April 27 and 28. If you are in the area, this will definitely be an event you won’t want to miss.

As summer approaches, don’t forget to mark your calendars for Nordic Fest on July 25-27. It will be another fun event full of Scandinavian heritage, lefse, and maybe even a trip to the Sugar Bowl or Whippy Dip!

We hope you are able to make it back to Decorah soon to embrace the Luther love that encompasses our campus. Your alma mater would love to have you!

Until next time,

Stephanie and Sam

As you may remember from your Fall 2018 Class Agent letter, Luther has recently completed an extensive brand strategy research process.

As a result of our research and in collaboration with members of the Luther community, we have developed several statements that will guide future communications.

We know that you, our alumni, are often asked about your alma mater. What you say to prospective students and their families about Luther College can have a huge impact on their decisions to visit campus, apply and, hopefully, enroll.

You know Luther well. You matter to us and we’re interested in hearing from you.

We invite you to take a few minutes to preview some of our new statements and share your thoughts. The example statements, as well as a response survey, are available online: luther.edu/alumni/brandsurvey

Many thanks!
