Nanfred Stanley "Bud" Sand, 84, of Morgantown, W.Va., formerly of Ottawa, Ill., died Feb. 1, at the Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.

Funeral services were Feb. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottawa with the Rev. David Ufkes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Memorial Park with full military rites conducted. Visitation was Feb. 9, at Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa.

Bud was born May 6, 1931, in Ossian, Iowa, to Nanfred John and Sylvia (Forde) Sand. He married Carol (Amundson) Sand ’58 on Dec. 27, 1958, in Morris. Bud served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a Petty Officer Sea Bee, stationed in San Diego and Guam.

He received his bachelor's degree in secondary education from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and master’s degrees in history and guidance counseling from Northern Illinois University.

He taught history and was a guidance counselor at OTHS for over 30 years; he also was a wrestling coach.

Bud was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiwanis Club, Illinois Teacher's Association and the National Teacher's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Kari Sand-Jecklin ’82 (Dave), of Morgantown, W.Va., Krista (Eric) Iverson, of Ottawa, and John (Alyssa) Sand, of Jacksonville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Sand, of Calif., and Jacob Sand, of Henderson, Nev.; and five sisters, Helen Sand Schaeffer ’61, of Decorah, Iowa, Shirley Brainard, of Postville, Iowa, Marge (Sand) Golden ’60 and Janet (Sand) Pinch ’62, of Henderson, Nev., and Elaine Evans, of Indianola, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert Sand ’45 and Greg Sand.

Pallbearers were Richard Fergusen, Melvin Roth, Bob Hunt, Ron Slack, Jim Harris and Joel Soltis. Honorary pallbearers (all deceased) were Bill Hamilton, Joe Soltis, John Huber and Rolf Demoll.
