Jon A. Vine, U.S. veteran, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday, May 1, 2016 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Memorial Services were held May 6, 2016, at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating. Inurnment was at Union Prairie Cemetery in rural Decorah with Full Military Honors.

Visitation was at Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Jon Arland Vine was born at home on River Street in Decorah, Iowa, on October 14, 1933, to Arthur and Millicent Anderson Vine. He was the third of their four children. Jon grew up in Decorah and Freeport. He played baseball at school, announced halftime at football games, acted in plays, and was a member of FFA. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1951 and attended Luther College. He served in the United States Army as a radio repair instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, from 1953 to 1955. He finished basic training just as the Korean War was ending.

Jon married Shirley Ann Erickson at Decorah Lutheran Church on October 14, 1956. The couple had two children, Tammy Ann and Craig Jon. They moved to Freeport in 1960 where they built a house, raised a family, and lived until moving back to Decorah in 2012.

Following his father Art’s footsteps, Jon worked at Anundsen’s Publishing Company for over 50 years. He was a printer and foreman for Anundsen’s and the Decorah Newspapers. He enjoyed gardening, square dancing, camping, photography, and computers. Jon and Shirley loved to travel; they took many bus trips around the country as well as longer vacations in Mexico, Spain, and Israel. He loved his family, friends, and pulling people’s legs. A lifelong member of Decorah Lutheran Church, Jon was active with the Sunday school as a teacher and superintendent. He was involved with numerous other volunteer activities at the church.

Jon died on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from a lung disease called sarcoidosis, which he’d had for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Marjorie (Paul) Treptow, Van (Elizabeth), and Arne (Dorothy).

Jon is survived by his wife Shirley; two children, Tammy Vine '79 (Jesus Arlaban) of Sac City, Iowa, and Craig Vine ’84 of St. Paul, Minn.; and by one granddaughter, Kimberley Ainhoa Arlaban of Sac City.

Memorials may be given to Heifer International (Heifer.org) used to end world hunger or to the Decorah Lutheran Church capital campaign fund (to repair the church roof) at 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
