Evelyn Joan (Gulsvig) Whiting was born April 10, 1940, in Sunburg, Minn., to Joseph Gulsvig ‘31 and Esther (Njus) Gulsvig. She died March 23, 2017, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Joan graduated from Wanamingo High School and attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She began working at Mayo full time in 1976 and spent most of her career in Human Resources. She later moved to the Recovery Claims Service Department as a Return to Work Coordinator. She retired in May of 2000 but continued to work on a part time basis until Feb. of 2009.

Joan married David Whiting Sept. 25, 1965, in Wanamingo. She was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church and was a member of the Miriam Circle. The couple wintered in Gulf Shores, Ala., and enjoyed traveling, golfing and visiting the grandchildren that she adored.

Survivors include her husband, David Whiting of Rochester; children, Christine Metzke of Milwaukee, and Chad (Susanne) Whiting of West Chester, Pa.; grandchildren Tara Metzke, and Ben and Graeme Whiting; and sister Karen (Gulsvig) Johnson ‘61 of LaPorte, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Margaret (Gulsvig) Lunde ‘64.

A memorial service for E. Joan Whiting, 76, of Rochester was held March 27, 2017, at Zumbro Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be in the Zumbro Lutheran Church Columbarium.
