Darleen Mae (Helgerson) Rem, 1951

Darleen Mae (Helgerson) Rem, age 89, passed away on Nov. 19, 2016. She was born May 21, 1927, in Mt. Sterling, Wis., to Roy and Laura Helgerson.

Darleen joined the Cadet Nurse Corps and graduated from Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She worked in Luther College health service and continued her education there. She graduated from Luther College in 1951.

She was united in marriage to Pastor Richard Rem ‘51, Oct. 14, 1950. Darleen served alongside Richard in parishes and nursing homes in Wisconsin during his ministry, yet she always considered Mt. Sterling her home. She loved music and singing and was especially proud to have sung in the Luther College Nordic Choir.

She is survived by daughter Ruth (Rem) Thickpenny ’73 (Pastor Richard Thickpenny); sons, Paul (Erica Fishman), Dave (Margie) and Steve (Pastor Michelle) Rem; grandchildren, Stephen, Jon Rem ‘04 (Sara), Emily, Jonathan (Lani), Heather, Rachel Rem ’16, and Anna; great-grandchildren, Emma Grace and Andrew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Richard Rem ‘51; parents, Roy and Laura Helgerson; sister and brother-in-law, Laurayne (Helgerson) Solberg ’49, and Lee Solberg ‘50; and grandson, Christopher Thickpenny.

Funeral services were held at Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church, 5th and Division St., Mt. Sterling, WI, on Dec. 1, 2016. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Manor, PO Box 217, Footville, WI 53537.
