Albert G. “Al” Bernatz, age 77, of Decorah, Iowa, died Jan. 12, 2018, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah. A memorial service was held in April.

Al was born Nov. 15, 1940, in Decorah, Iowa, to Albert “Babe” and Gladys (Knutson) Bernatz. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1959 and attended Luther College.

Al was in the Army from 1963 to 1965 and was stationed in Hawaii. He worked for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for many years. After moving back to Decorah, he worked for Aase Haugen Senior Services for 18 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and half-brothers Durwin Bernatz and Gerald Bernatz ‘50.

Al is survived by his half-brother Howard Bernatz ‘51 of Decorah; Nephews – Michael Bernatz ’76 (Denise (Danielson) Bernatz ‘77), Winona, Minn., and Richard Bernatz ‘77 (Dodi), Decorah; Nieces – Jana Cunningham, Goodyear, Ariz., and Kari (Gregg) Rude, Decorah; and cousins, including Joel Bernatz, Chelan, Wash., and Jean Fry, Marion, Iowa.
