Monte C. Smalley passed away peacefully on May 16, 2016. Monte was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Wagner, S.D., to Howard and Thelma Smalley. The family moved to Monroe, Wash., and then to Everett, Wash., where he resided until 1987. In 1945, he graduated from Everett High School where he was active in football and many clubs. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the battleship South Dakota, a coincidence of his birthplace, until the end of WWII. After the war, he enrolled in Everett Junior college, class of 1947, where he again excelled in football. Soon after his marriage to Alicia McElroy, he entered and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. In 1950, he returned to Everett and joined his mother, Thelma Smalley in developing Monte’s Styles for Men, a new high fashion young men’s clothing store. In 1959, the family added a new concept, Gary’s Closet and Boston Charley’s with his brother, Gary in downtown Seattle. Then in 1968, Monte’s moved to the corner of Colby and California joining the family's new addition of Smalley’s Gentlemen’s Apparel. With his apparel career in full swing, the family had seven stores between Seattle and Everett. After a long career in the clothing business, Monte joined a Commercial real estate company in the Everett area where he was involved in sales. Missing the clothing business, he later joined Union Bay Sportswear until 1996. His relationship with his wholesale and retail customers was very important to him and he sincerely loved helping them achieve their needs. Monte had a lifelong love of piano and music. He was a member of the Everett Golf and Country Club, a member of the Everett YMCA, an active supporter of International Children’s Outreach Network (ICON), and an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Everett. He especially loved hunting with family and friends in Eastern Washington. Monte is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sandi Smalley; his children, Christine Stroh (Ken), Craig Smalley (Diane) and Curtis Smalley (J.R.); four grandchildren, three great grandchildren; and stepsons, Shawn and Timothy Sullivan. Monte is also survived by his brother, Gary Smalley, his wife, Patti and family. He was predeceased by his son, Cory in 2012. A celebration of his life for family and friends was held June 4, 2016, at Grace Lutheran Church, Edmonds, Wash. Monte was a special man with a very caring heart who touched everyone with his great sense of humor. Thanks be to God for Monte.
