Eugene R. Hanson, 81, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Sept. 18, 2018, at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.

A memorial service was held Sept. 27, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Inurnment, with U.S. Army honors, was at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Rock Island, assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to ELCA World Hunger; Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.; Luther College, Decorah, Iowa; or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

Eugene was born Aug. 17, 1937, in Hayward, Wis., the only child of Wilbur and Gladys Monson Hanson. He married Naomi G. Borreson ‘61 in 1959 in Harmony, Minn.

Eugene received his bachelor's degree from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1959, his master's of divinity from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, in 1963, his master's in counseling from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., in 1978, and his doctorate in ministry from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., in 1983.

From 1963 to 1970, Eugene served as the pastor in Bucyrus and Towner, N.D. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Army in 1971 to 1991. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after being First Armored Division Chaplain from 1988 to 1990.

After retiring from the military, he was senior pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Beloit, Wis., from 1992 until he retired in 2002.

Surviving are his wife, Naomi (Borreson) Hanson ‘61, of Davenport; children (and spouses), Katie Hanson ‘82 (Dr. Dave Crowe ‘82), Davenport, Dr. James Hanson ‘84 (Heidi Faber-Nettrour), Ankeny, Iowa, and Suellen Hanson ‘86 (Rev. Steve Grove), Minneapolis; grandchildren, Michael Crowe ‘13 (Melissa Erickson ‘12), Tyler Crowe ‘15, Emily Crowe ‘17, Tim Hanson, Megan Hanson and Maddie Grove.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents.
