Harold Emil “Doc” Krueger passed away at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D. on July 2, 2018.

Harold Emil Krueger was born June 15, 1928, on a farm in Redwood County in Wabasso, Minn., to Walter Hubert Emil Krueger and Anna (Radunz) Krueger. The family lived on the farm until Harry was five years old. At this time, they moved to Redwood Falls, Minn., where he would graduate from Redwood High School in 1946.

Harry began playing trumpet in grade school and had teachers who would encourage him to make music his life. He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1950. Furthering his education in music, Harry received his M.A. (1956) and Ed.D (1964) degrees from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Harry met Phyllis (Breen) Krueger ‘52 of Hurley, S.D., while at Luther College. They were married on Aug. 20, 1950. Shortly after, Harry would find teaching positions in music in Calmar and Britt, Iowa., Glencoe, Minn., and St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn.

Harry joined the Augustana College Music Department staff in 1965. Here he became known as "Doc." He directed the brass activities including the Northlanders Jazz Band, the Augustana Brass Choir, and the music for Viking Varieties. Doc was chair of the music department for his final three years at Augie. He retired in 1993.

Doc remained active in all aspects of music and music education. He organized the Sioux Empire Brass Society which he conducted for ten years.

Doc was a member of many performing groups, held positions with music educator associations, and was honored many times over for his contributions to the music world. He was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Gladys and Donald.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Breen) Krueger ‘52 and four sons: Dave (Donna), Sioux Falls; Mark (Sonja), Boise; Tim, Sioux Falls; Tom (Nancy), Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of extended family.

A memorial service was held on July 5, 2018, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 909 West 33rd St., Sioux Falls, SD.
