Marie Genevieve (Fjelstad) Posz

Marie Genevieve (Fjelstad) Posz age 94, died on Feb. 22, 2020, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn. Marie was born to Pastor Joseph Alexander Fjelstad and Marie Gunhilde Stenehjem Fjelstad on Nov. 4, 1925, when they lived in Ray, N.D. She attended school in Ray, Enderlin and Lisbon, N.D., before moving to Winona, Minn., in 1941 when her father died while a Chaplain in the Army. She graduated from Winona High School in 1943. She attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1943 & 1944 where she was a radio announcer at the college radio station. She had a year and a half of credits from Luther.

On Aug. 26, 1944, she married Albert Conrad Posz in Harmony, Minn. The two of them moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where both of them attended the State University of Iowa until Feb. of 1946 when they moved to East Lansing, Mich., where she continued her studies, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University in 1948, and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling, School of Education, in 1953. Marie taught for five years in Michigan, prior to starting her family. She gave birth to two children: Carl Conrad Posz in 1955 and Sylvia Marie Posz Hamilton in 1957.

Marie was a member of Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, Minn., for 45 years.  Marie was active in music all of her life, singing in high school groups and church choirs, and playing the piano. She and her husband Dr. Albert Conrad Posz organized the first choir at University Lutheran Church in East Lansing, Mich., and Marie helped her husband in his chores as Choir Director as well as singing in the choir. In addition, for 25 years Marie taught sight singing to young people as part of a Church Choir School at Westwood Lutheran Church, in St. Louis Park, Minn.

Marie was also active on education committees at her church and a leader in the Senior Citizens group, called Westwood Winners, at her church. She also served on the board of directors for the League of Women Voters.

Marie was chosen by Augsburg Publishing Company to travel with several Lutheran pastors to introduce new Sunday School materials in various parts of the country.

Marie also worked in retail sales at several different stores, was an excellent tailor making sports coats for her husband, and a seamstress, making all of the drapes for their various homes and clothing for the children.

Marie was an accomplished Porcelain Artist, having painted many fine pieces of porcelain. At one time, her hand-painted plates, bells, and other fine pieces were placed for sale in five different gift shops.

Marie was preceded in death by her father Chaplain Joseph Alexander Fjelstad and Mother Marie Stenehjem Fjelstad. She is survived by her husband, Albert Conrad, her son Carl Conrad Posz of Chanhassen, Minn., and his wife Carlotta and their son Adrian and his wife Julia, also by her daughter Sylvia Marie Posz Hamilton of St. Louis Park, Minn., and husband Brian and two children, Heather Marie (Nick) Tourville, great granddaughter, Evelyn Marie Tourville and Kyle Eugene Hamilton. She is also survived by her brother Joseph Alexander Fjelstad Jr. ‘50 (Colleen Fjelstad), and brother-in-law Holger Christiansen ‘50, plus many nieces and nephews.
