Philip D. “Phil” Hellestad, age 90, of Plymouth, Wis., passed away on Nov. 5, 2020.

Phil was born on Jan. 14, 1930, in Shawano County a son to Elmer and Mildred (Nee Danielson) Hellestad. He graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1947, and continued his education at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1951.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1951-1955.

Phil taught and coached at High Schools in Potosi and Albany and then at Plymouth High School from 1959 until his retirement in 1994.

On March 24, 1951, he married Janet (Hanson) Hellestad ‘54 in Wittenberg, Wis.

Phil was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed all sports as well as the activities of his family. He enjoyed traveling with Jan to Tampa, Fla., in winter for 20 years, visiting many states and Norway.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church for many years, was a Sunday school superintendent, usher, reader and was involved in many other church activities. Phil also belonged to “The Sons of Norway,” many card clubs, golf, softball, basketball and bowling leagues.

Survivors are his beloved wife: Janet “Jan” (Hanson) Hellestad ‘54, two sons; Mark (Cheryl) and David (Carrie) and daughter; Merrie (Jack) Novak and further survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses and thirteen great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law; Lee (Sandy) Hanson.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer and Mildred Hellestad, his parents-in-law; Henry and Myrtle Hanson, brothers; Victor (Melda) Hellestad, Leland (June) Hellestad and Kenneth Hellestad.

Due to Covid restrictions, a private memorial service was held for immediate family members only.
