Adrian S. Helgeson, 1941

Spring 2021 (May 13, 2021)

Adrian S. Helgeson of Wayzata, Minn., passed away on Dec. 26, 2020, at age 100. He was born July 10, 1920, in Harmony, Minn., and grew up on a farm nearby. He attended a one room school house for eight years, and later graduated from Harmony High School in 1937. He met his wife while attending Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and graduated in 1941.

His mathematical skills led him to a career as an accountant and in 1974 he founded the CPA firm Adrian S. Helgeson and Company. The firm provided attest, tax and management services to more than 20 colleges and universities, numerous commercial and highway contractors, hospitals and retirement centers and clients in several other industries. His insight, knowledge and advice were highly regarded by everyone.

Adrian was a long-time member at Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, Minn. He served as treasurer for many years and was often selected for one of the boards. He was an important contributor to the congregation's Boy Scout troop when his son was active.

Fishing was a life-long sport for Adrian. He enjoyed the Park Rapids and Brainerd areas, and took his family fishing for crappie, walleye and northern pike. When grandkids arrived, he taught them how to select lures, handle bait, cast, and set the hook. Adrian also enjoyed golf and was a member for many years at the Minneapolis Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing with kids and grandkids as well as clients. After golf, everyone would enjoy a burger and beer at the 19th hole.

When not golfing or fishing with grandkids, he enjoyed sitting down with a good book. Murder mysteries and Westerns were his favorites, including authors, Erle Stanley Gardner, John Grisham and Louis L'Amour.

After living most of his adult life in Golden Valley, Adrian moved to Folkestone Retirement Community in Wayzata where he met and enjoyed the company of several new and wonderful friends. Adrian is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyne. He selflessly cared for her for more than nine years following her stroke. He attended to her, ran errands for her, and made sure they were both in church on Sundays.

He is survived by a daughter, Randi, a son, Richard, and a daughter-in-law, Virjean. He is also missed by grandsons Leif, Bjorn, and Tor (Libby). Adrian was blessed in his later years by four great grandchildren, Anders, Tait, Ingrid and Odin. He spent lots of time with grandkids, and they miss him greatly. Everyone remembers his kindness, empathy, patience, inquisitiveness and dry humor.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Folkestone as well as Allina Hospice. Because of the current virus conditions, the family has held a small, private service. Memorials can be made to Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, Folkestone (Presbyterian Homes and Services) in Wayzata, or Wildcat Sanctuary in Sandstone, Minn.
