Steven Craig Upmeyer, 1976

Spring 2022 (May 20, 2022)

Steven Craig Upmeyer of Indianapolis, and formerly of Tell City, passed away at his home on Dec. 8, 2021. He spent his last days surrounded by his family; nearly four years after being diagnosed with lymphoma.

Steve was born on Aug. 11, 1954, to William and Audrey (Lenz) Upmeyer in Maquoketa, Iowa. After graduating from Maquoketa High School in 1972 where he was involved in many sports, he went on to study physical education at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. After graduation, he and Jane (Stearns) Upmeyer ‘76 married in June, 1976.

Steve and Jane moved from Marion, Iowa, to Tell City, Ind., in 1986 where he worked as an investment advisor. Steve was a committed member of the community, and in 2019, he and Jane were named Distinguished Citizens of the Year by the Tell City Historical Society. Steve’s multiple leadership positions included the Perry County Memorial Hospital Foundation board. He and Jane helped to provide a free Thanksgiving dinner at Evangelical United Church of Christ where Steve served on the church council and finance committee, along with Table of Blessings in partnership with Catholic Charities.

When asked, Steve would say his greatest accomplishment was raising his two daughters. From coaching their ball games, to traveling to support them in cheer squad, to construction projects in their homes; Steve delighted in time with his daughters and their families.

Steve is survived by his wife, Jane (Stearns) Upmeyer ‘76; daughters, Amy Smith and husband Josh, Staci Laski and husband Jack; grandchildren Meredith, Meyer, and Margot, all of Indianapolis; brother Dave Upmeyer and wife Peg of Grosse Point, Mich.; and sister Cathy Rickard and husband Billy of Smyrna, N.Y.

A Memorial Service was held Dec. 18, 2021, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Tell City, with Rev. Ben Keckler officiating.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Perry County Memorial Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

Huber Funeral Home, Tell City, assisted Steve’s family with his wishes.
