Richard John Landborg, 1955

Richard John Landborg, 88, passed away Nov. 21, 2021.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria (Smalley) Landborg ‘55 of 66 years, daughters, Julie Jahn, Lisa (Gordon) Dryden, Kimberly (Jim) Fleming, Son, Jeffrey and granddaughter, Cassie Dryden. He was born May 13, 1933, in Manchester, Iowa, to Clifford J.A. and Beatrice (Titterud) Landborg. He married Gloria (Smalley) on Aug. 13, 1955, in Osage, Iowa, in a double wedding with his sister, Patricia (Landborg) Penney ’57.

Richard received a B.A. degree from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. His professional career consisted of teaching chemistry at Augustana University, Sioux Falls, S.D., for twenty years. He then switched to real estate endeavors until his gradual retirement around 2010. Other professional experiences were teaching at a Panamanian University as a Fulbright Professor in 1967 and doing chemical research for Standard Oil and Phillips Petroleum. Activities he enjoyed were refereeing high school wrestling and football, leading student groups to Central America, and membership in Civil Air Patrol and Experimental Aviation Association.

Richard became very knowledgeable through extensive reading about his two favorite subjects, WWII and aviation/aircraft. He obtained a pilot’s license and even attempted building his own small plane which was never finished due to lack of time.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia (Landborg) Penney ‘57; brother-in-law, Richard Penney; son-in-law, George Jahn; and nephew, David Penney.

A memorial service was held Nov. 26, 2021, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
