Marjorie (Olson) Hove, 1950

Fall 2022 (September 26, 2022)

Marjorie (Olson) Hove, age 95, of Decorah died on July 12, 2022, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

Her funeral service was July 16, 2022, at the Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Adam Starrett presiding.  Burial was in the Pontoppidan Cemetery.

The family wishes that memorial donations be made to Glenwood Lutheran Church or Vesterheim Norwegian Museum.

Marjorie was born on Oct. 25, 1926, to Henry and Martha Olson. She graduated from Decorah High School. She completed “normal training” and attended Luther College so that she could teach at the country schools in the area. Following World War II, she met Milton Hove at a local dance. They married at Glenwood Lutheran Church on Sept. 26, 1948 and farmed together for over 50 years on the family farm settled by her Norwegian-American immigrant ancestors. She always had the coffee pot on and treats to share when she welcomed friends and family who frequently stopped by the farmhouse. Marj loved to garden growing beautiful flowers and vegetables, canning and freezing the abundant harvest of tomatoes, corn, beans, cucumbers and zucchini (so much zucchini). The homegrown sweet corn and green beans were family favorites requested by the grandchildren at holiday meals. She was committed to serving her community – active in the church and she also served as a 4-H leader, on the Aase Haugen Board, the Luther College Parents’ Council and the County Planning & Zoning Commission. She and Milton enjoyed their friends in the Luren – concerts, Sangerfest and trips to Norway. She also loved to make traditional Norwegian foods – lefse, kringla, krumkake and often demonstrated at the Nordic Fest or Vesterheim Museum. Marj was a devoted caregiver and a strong woman of faith dedicated to helping others. She believed in the love of family and fostered a deep connection among her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Susan Hove, Joann (Hove) Voltmer ’73, and Ruth (Hove) Schultz ’82 (Randy); daughter-in-law, Paula Hove (Steve); six grandchildren, Phil and Jenny Hove, Gerad Voltmer (Denise), Anna Voltmer (Ashley Stiles), Lauren Roth (Patrick) and Alex Schultz (fiancé, Haley Walton); three great grandchildren, Dalen Voltmer, Harrison and Olivia Roth; and three great step-grandchildren, Kolin, Kasey and Keatyn Krauskopf.

She was predeceased by her husband Milton, her son Steve, her parents Henry and Martha Olson and two sisters, Helen Dennis and Donna Rae Olson.

The family would like to thank the Aase Haugen health care team for the loving care during her time at the nursing home, and friends & family who supported her with visits, cards and notes.
