Oaxaca week 1 is on the books!

My name is Luvia Burleigh a Junior Luther College majoring in International Studies as well as minoring in International Business and Spanish. During this J Term I am studying in Oaxaca, México. I have been in Oaxaca for a week and have learned so much.

The first week in México was filled with Spanish class, conversations and cooking class. I have enjoyed cooking class and conversations with students in Oaxaca. In the cooking class we made Guias de calabaza, which is a traditional soup of Oaxaca. My favorite food we have made so far was Chilaquiles, a popular Mexican dish. I have loved learning about all of the popular foods here.

Another way that I have been studying in México is having conversations with students that live in Oaxaca. We have an hour everyday to practice our Spanish and also help them practice English. The conversations I have had with my partner were about the differences between the U.S. and México, the culture of Oaxaca, and what our families are like. During these conversations I have taken notes on the new Spanish words I have learned. These conversations have helped me further develop my Spanish skills.

Lastly, I want to express how much I like living with a host family. My family does not speak any English, therefore I have become more confident speaking in Spanish. Every day that passes by I have learned about new meals and how they are cooked, traditions and way of living in Oaxaca. They have 3 dogs that love to play and are always happy to see me! I can’t wait to learn more about my family and have a greater connection.

¡Hasta luego!

Chilaquiles that we made ourselves in class. They were super yummy, especially with cheese and lime squeezed over them!
