Meet your 2019-2020 Nottingham bloggers!

For the over two-thirds of Luther students who study off campus during their four years here, the world will never look the same again. Off-campus study is a life-changing experience, resulting in broadened perspectives, unforgettable memories, and a more comprehensive and nuanced view of the world.

Several Luther students pursue in-depth and immersive study by participating in semester and year-long programs off campus. These blogs are meant to help friends, family, and future Norse experience life alongside our students around the globe.

The Nottingham Program:

Luther’s Nottingham Program is a full academic year study abroad program where 8-12 students during their junior year all live in a communal “flat” or apartment together in Nottingham, England. For our group this year, we have 10 of us total living together! Students are part-time at the University of Nottingham, taking courses and participating in UK student life, and also part-time with Luther with the program director that comes over with the students teaching house courses as well. Because of the nature of the program, students have several opportunities to do group travel, led by the program director, and lots of time for individual travel as well (our first group trip is going to be to Scotland - keep an eye out for a post about it)! This blog will detail life in the UK as a student, where our group is traveling together and individually, and what we all learn while living life abroad!

Meet the bloggers:

Hi, I’m Kiara Hohn! I’m a double major in English and Art, and play on Luther’s women’s soccer team. I applied for the Nottingham program because I was fascinated by the chance to spend an entire year immersed in a culture as opposed to just a semester, and excited at the opportunity to study English in England! I’m especially looking forward to the chances for individual travel so I can get to all of the amazing European art museums to see the pieces that I’ve learned about in my Art History classes. Currently I’m looking into the different “societies” or clubs you can join at the University - it’s a hard choice when there are so many to choose from!

And I’m Aly! I’m an English and History double major. I knew early on that I wanted to study abroad and this program is so unique and checked all of the boxes for what I was looking for with a year-long, fully immersive program with plenty of time for independent travel. Nottingham and the UK in general also perfectly fit my interests in British literature and history. I’m so excited to visit so many important historical and literary sites that I’ve learned so much about in person, I’m hoping to visit as many as possible! I can’t wait to explore everything this experience has to offer. And of course, share all of it with all of you as the year goes on!

Signing off for now,

Kiara and Aly
