GERALD D. “GERRY” YOUNG (November 16, 1936 - October 1, 2012) Gerald D. “Gerry” Young, age 75, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, October 1, 2012 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. Funeral Services were held October 5, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating with burial at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Gerald Dean “Gerry” Young was born on November 16, 1936, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Olga (Thompson) Young. He was baptized on December 13, 1936, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust and was confirmed on October 28, 1951, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1955. He wrestled and played baseball in high school. He worked for Lyle Cary during high school. He then attended Luther College for one year. Gerry was united in marriage to DONNA (WINGER) YOUNG ‘59 on June 15, 1963, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. This union was blessed with two children: Amy and Jon. Gerry worked at Gibbs Cook in Mason City before coming back to Decorah and working at Deco Products for 37½ years as a tool and die foreman, retiring in December of 1999. He served as an usher at First Lutheran Church for several years. He was a former member of the Elks and a member of Pheasants Forever. He was also a 4-H softball coach. Gerry was a perfectionist but also a very patient man. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He was a handyman and very willing to help anyone at any time. He loved his family – his children and grandchildren – and loved to tell jokes. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gerry is survived by his wife Donna; two children, Amy (Greg) Lage of Postville, Iowa, and Jon (Shawn) Young of Decorah, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Amanda and Hannah Lage, Tucker and Brody Young.
