June (Smedstad) Severson, 1948

JUNE (SMEDSTAD) SEVERSON, age 86, of Northfield, died on Oct. 27, 2012. She was born July 3, 1926, in Starbuck, Minn., daughter of Oscar and Inga (Sandvik) Smedstad. She was the oldest of four sisters and lived on a farm until 1943. She graduated from Starbuck High School in 1944, and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1948, majoring in math and history. After college, June became a high school math teacher in Thief River Falls. There she met Arnold (Lars) Larson, another math teacher, whom she married June 23, 1950. They had three children and in 1961 moved to Northfield, where Lars became principal of Northfield Junior-Senior High School. Lars passed away on Oct. 31, 1968. In 1968, June became the first woman realtor in Rice County, continuing to sell real estate through 1998. June married Harland Severson on Feb. 14, 1975. They became a blended family with seven children that included five teenagers. June and Harland enjoyed traveling to various places, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Norway, as well as to their cabins in the summer, and Tucson in the winter. Harland passed away on July 4, 2002. She continued to spend summers in Northfield and winters in Tucson since Harland’s death. June is survived by children, Julie (Pat) Larson Windler of Richfield, Minn., Craig (Ann) Larson of Tucson, Ariz.; Kevin (Lori) Larson of Northfield, Minn.; Susan (Severson) Aldorfer of Alexandria, Va.; Deb Severson (Craig Perman) of Bloomington, Minn.; Jackie (Andy) Severson Hallock of Pawley’s Island, S.C.; and Scott (Pauline) Severson of Marysville, Wash.; grandchildren, Colleen Windler (Mitchell Forderer), Michael Windler, Heather Larson and fiance Jeff Altman, Christopher Larson, Christina (Andrew) Larson Keilen, Kory Larson; Jason (Megan) Aldorfer, and Jennifer (Keith) Aldorfer Depperschmidt; great grandchildren, Jason and Adam Aldorfer; Keith, Hailey, and Ava Depperschmidt; and sisters, DELORES (SMEDSTAD) BURSTROM ‘50 (WARREN BURSTROM ’48), COLLEEN (SMEDSTAD) GANDRUD ‘56 (DON GANDRUD ’56), and Gail (Ron) Johnson. June was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Arnold (Lars) Larson and Harland Severson. June was very fortunate to have had two wonderful husbands. The memorial service was held Nov. 2, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Memorials are preferred to the Northfield Senior Center or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. Funeral arrangements were by the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield.
