SARA MARIE (KAHN) JENSON died on October 1, 2012, at the age of 88. Born and raised in Spring Grove, MN, Sara was an excellent student who graduated from high school a year ahead of her classmates. Since she was so young, her parents convinced her to go to nearby Luther College, with the proviso that she could transfer after a year if she didn’t like it. Luther must have agreed with her because she stayed, continuing the pattern of excellence she had begun in high school and graduating from Luther in three years, magna cum laude, in 1944. Sara was Luther’s Homecoming Queen in 1942. Sara met her future husband, Dr. Carroll “Hap” Jenson (’43) in the library at Luther. The library, so much her home at Luther, became a place she never really left. After graduation, she earned her ABLS degree from the University of Michigan, then worked as a librarian in La Crosse, at Luther Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, and, finally, in the Stillwater (MN) public schools. After her retirement, she continued to work as a substitute librarian until the age of 80. During her career, Sara served on many local and regional library and synod boards. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bayport, MN, serving as the first woman president of the Church Council and as Sunday School superintendent. Sara, who served on the original board, and Hap were instrumental in beginning Books for Africa, an organization which ultimately provided over 30 million books to schools in Africa. She and Hap travelled widely, visiting the British Isles, Mexico, Greece, Japan, and the Far East, as well as several trips to Africa in conjunction with their church’s mission work there. Sara was preceded in death by her only son Peter. Besides her husband Hap, she is survived by one grandson, two brothers-in-law (Dr. Jim, ’41 and Dr. Paul, ’48), a sister-in-law (Lois, ’52), and many nieces and nephews.
