Helen A. (Skogsmark) Jellum, 1938

Helen A. (Skogsmark) Jellum, age 95, of Osage, died Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Memorial services were held February 25, 2012, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Stephen Bohling and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment was at the Osage Cemetery.

Helen was born March 28, 1916, in Turtle Lake, North Dakota, the daughter of Iver and Minnie (Stinson) Skogsmark. After the death of Helen’s father, the family went to live with her maternal grandparents, Andrew and Brita Stinson, on their farm near Cresco. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1934. In 1938, Helen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Luther College and in 1946 received her Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Iowa. After completing her Master’s Degree, she taught piano and music theory at Luther College. She then took teaching assignments at several towns in Minnesota. Helen moved to Washington state in 1952 where she worked as an administrative secretary for the Army Corps of Engineers. Helen enjoyed the mountains, the ocean, and being outdoors. She especially enjoyed hiking. Throughout her life, she was active in her church and continued to express her love for music by serving as a church organist in a variety of congregations. Later in life, Helen married Lloyd Jellum ’52, and they made their home in Osage.

Helen is survived by two stepsons, Mark (Christine) Jellum of Osage, Eric (Annette) Jellum of Osage; step-grandchildren, Trula Schafer of Edmonds, Washington, Jeff (KT) Schafer and their sons, Samuel and Joseph, of Cedar Rapids, and Joshua (Kristina) Schafer of Kent, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Inez (SKOGSMARK) Jellum ‘40; and her husband, Lloyd Jellum ’52.
