Class of 1963 Spring 2018 Letter

Spring 2018

Dear Member of the Class of 1963,

It’s late February. I’m sitting on our patio in Palm Springs, Calif., enjoying the clear skies, the sunshine, the warm temperatures, and our view of the powerful San Jacinto Mountains. Some of you are in warm places, too, and some of you are where it is cold and snowy. Wherever you are, greetings! I hope this finds you and yours well and happy.

The song lyrics say it all: “May our thoughts to thee oft turn, when we’re absent far away. May we then sincerely yearn to return to thee someday.”

That “someday” for us is Homecoming 2018, when we gather for our 55-year class reunion. Mark your calendars for October 26-28, 2018. Treat yourself. Plan to return. You won’t regret it. Start calling now for hotel reservations. Check out B&B options. Check out Luther’s website for a link to lodging. Watch the mail for more information.

While your calendars are out, please note and consider these two tours sponsored by Luther: the Nordic Choir Companion Tour of Germany and Czechia, set for May 28 to June 8 and the Sicily and Malta Alumni Tour, October 7 to the 20.

For detailed information on any of these amazing travel opportunities contact the Alumni Office, 1-800-2luther. To check on Luther Alumni events being held in your community go luther.edu/alumni/events.

Also, as many of you know, Thursday, March 8, was Luther's third annual Giving Day! Thousands tuned in to an all-day livestream from Marty's and joined the fun through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more). Overall, a whopping $478,193 was raised for the Luther Fund - WOW! If you'd like to relive the fun (and see the 12-hour livestream), visit luther.edu/giving-day. THANK YOU to all who donated and made this day such a success!

The Decorah community continues to receive accolades and national recognition as a dynamic, welcoming and preferred place to visit and to live. The positive Decorah-Luther College relationship is legendary.

The scenic beauty of the region, the bike trails, the vibrant business district, the annual Nordic Fest (July 26 – 28) and, of course, the world class Vesterheim Norwegian–American Museum are the iconic staples.

New to the “must see-must do” Decorah itinerary are two hometown breweries drawing fans and awards from near and far. Check out Toppling Goliath (tgbrews.com), and Pulpit Rock (pulpitrockbrewing.net).

Remember the Alumni Ambassador Program (luther.edu/ambassadors/). When you refer a prospective student to the Admissions Office and that person enrolls, they will receive an annual $1,000 scholarship, in your name, for the years they attend the college, a total of $4,000. Dick and I have referred prospective students and know the program. It’s greatly appreciated by students and their parents.

Class Agent letters are intended to keep us connected with one another and with Luther. The college is good about providing items to include, but I need you to send your news for sharing with classmates.

In my last letter I asked for classmate news and Marsh Lundberg answered the call. Marsh is an active volunteer in his community. He serves his church, the local hospice, a soup kitchen, and delivers groceries to home-bound people. Marsh also shared that classmate Gil Perzan is living in Chicago. Thanks, Marsh.

Good Morning Miss America, a play written by Phyllis (Dankers) Yes, premiers March 10, at the CoHo Theater in Portland, Ore. It runs through March 31. Congratulations Phyllis. Very proud of you!

Sandy Hoeg shared the obituary for classmate Dick Kleppe, who died in December. Gene Haugland, classmate and former Luther Regent, died in January.

Please send news to share. How are things for you? Where are you? How are you? What are you doing with your time? Hobbies? Travels? Insights and Perspectives. Blessings? Others are interested.

Keep in touch. Hope to see you in October!

Soli Deo Gloria!
