January Term Courses

J-Term Argentina-Chile

This course focuses on Spanish language proficiency and the cultures of Argentina and Chile. After finishing a tour of Buenos Aires, participants travel to Mendoza, Argentina and take Spanish classes at ECELA (Escuelas y Centros de Español en Latinoamérica). Afternoons/evenings and weekends are spent learning about Argentina’s culture through city tours, outdoor activities, visit to a typical estancia, cooking and tango classes. Located in the northern-central part of the country, Mendoza is a region of foothills and high plains, on the eastern side of the Andes.

Each student lives two weeks with a Spanish speaking family in Mendoza. The course finishes in Santiago, the capital of Chile, where students  live with a Chilean family and are placed in a service-learning program to serve a community in Chilean barrios. Participants visit museums and historical sites. Primary locations are Buenos Aires and Mendoza, Argentina and Santiago, Valparaíso and Isla Negra, Chile.

J-Term Dominican Republic

This program introduces Luther students to the most meaningful aspects of Dominican culture while combining intense study of the Spanish language with artistic expressions, guided visits to cultural centers and public service institutions plus ecological tourism. Students attend classes at FLACSO-RD and live with Spanish speaking host families in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.

J-Term Peru

This course focuses on Spanish language proficiency and the civilization of Peru. After 1-2 days of Peruvian history and society in Lima, students study Spanish intensively four hours daily at CPA (Centro Peruano Americano, but known as ”El Cultural”) in Trujillo, immersing themselves in the cultural, social, economic, and geographic diversity of this fascinating country. Afternoons/evenings are spent learning about Peru’s rich multicultural past, present, and future.To facilitate language development and cultural immersion, each student lives two weeks with a Spanish speaking family. After two weeks in Trujillo, the course finishes in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, and visit Machu Picchu. Primary locations are Lima, Trujillo, and Cusco. 

J-Term Spain

This course focuses on Spanish language proficiency and the study of the diverse cultural heritage of Spain. The course takes place in Málaga, where students participate in daily classes at Málaga ¡Sí! Spanish School and live with local families. Afternoons/evenings are spent in co-curricular activities including visits to the cathedral, historical center, Museo Picasso, gastronomic tour, and white towns and villages in Málaga. Students also take flamenco and salsa classes. The course also includes full day tours to Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba, and Madrid.
