Brief Course Description

Schooling in Jamaica and the U.S. provides students with the opportunity to visit schools in Jamaica and the U.S. to examine the dilemmas in schooling practices and education policies that affect the developing and the developed world. Educational policy and its dilemmas are grounded in the social tensions between political interests and values. Students will have the opportunity to think about educational concerns and the cultural differences they will confront during this course and later as parents, workers, and citizens. Traveling around the island of Jamaica and the city of Chicago will leave students with an understanding of educational practices in very different contexts. The goal is to better understand contemporary challenges confronting schools.
