Closing Routine

Closing the Circulation Desk:

  1. Make closing announcements at appropriate times (see sheet on public address system).
  2. Record gate statistics from security system counter.
  3. Make sure all Reserve materials and laptops are checked in.
  4. Place Key board in Supervisor’s office.
  5. Lock cash drawer using key on keyboard.
  6. Shut down Circulation and Reserve terminals.
  7. Close Circulation Supervisor’s door AFTER the front doors are locked and Submaster Key is returned to Key board.
  8. Exit through front door with push bar.

Closing the Library: Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Keys needed: Submaster, Elevator (initially)

Basement:

  • Turn lights off (one light at the elevator and one at the double doors leading to the facilities side of the basement remain on automatically as security lights)

Lower Floor:

  • Close/lock Digital Media Studio and Control Room (inside Room 100A) doors; leave Lab door (room 100A) unlocked
  • Check staff break room to make sure lights are off
  • Check rear stairwell
  • Turn off light switch near stairwell door
  • Check handicapped bathrooms
  • Check rear stairwell
  • Make sure no one is using the computers
  • Check study rooms to ensure they are empty – close doors if open
  • Check bathrooms and turn off light switch
  • Turn off gallery lights (circle knob by bathrooms)
  • Turn off office hall lights (by paintings)
  • Lock main stair doors
  • Shut off staff office lights (just around the corner from the clock)
  • Shut floor lights off at panel and go to the upper floor

Upper Floor:

  • Check Archives door
  • Check rear stairwell
  • Check rear stairwell
  • Check study rooms to ensure they are empty – close doors if open
  • Check bathrooms and turn off light switch
  • Turn off gallery lights (circle knob by bathrooms)
  • Check Rare Book Room door to make sure it is closed and locked
  • Turn off six light switches behind public access computer
  • Lock main stair doors
  • Shut floor lights off at panel and go to main floor

Main Floor:

  • Check all Staff doors (ITS support coordinator’s office, the three to tech services, the
    door behind Research Help, and all the office doors in the
    hallway behind the Research Help area)
  • Check rear stairwell
  • Turn off the lights in the back corner (microfilm area)
  • Lock Help Desk call center and work area door and pull them closed, even if people are still there
  • Check rear stairwell
  • Make sure no one is using the computers
  • Check study rooms to ensure they are empty – close doors if open
  • Check bathrooms and turn off light switch
  • Turn off gallery lights (circle knob by bathrooms)
  • Check Hovde to make sure everyone is out and turn off lights
  • Turn off TV/digital sign
  • Turn off sitting area lights (4 switches near the clock heading towards the computer lab)
  • Lock the front doors (NO EARLIER THAN 3 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING!!); turn off light switch next to the fire alarm pull at the front doors
  • Return SubMaster key to keyboard in the Circulation Supervisor’s Office and if all keys are there, shut door
  • Turn last lights off at the panel and then the switch next to the time clock behind circulation, leave as last people go out of the library; turn around and make sure front doors are shut tight behind you after you go out the door.
