Interlibrary Loans

  • Interlibrary loans are either books that are borrowed from other libraries for use by our patrons OR books from our collection that are loaned to other libraries for use by their patrons.
  • To place an Interlibrary Loan request, patrons should click on “Interlibrary Loan (ILL)” under Tools (the second column) on the library web-site.
  • Patrons may request ILL renewals by following the prompts once they are signed in.
  • ILL books are shelved alphabetically by patron last name on the ILL Hold Shelf.
  • To check out an ILL: Scan/enter patron ID under “Assist Patrons” to access their library account. Scan barcode on paper slip wrapped around book’s front cover. De-sensitize all ILL books before handing them to the patron.
  • If, for any reason, you cannot complete an ILL checkout (the Internet is down, the system is down, etc.), follow the same procedures as with Preus Library books: scan patron IDs and book slip barcodes on the pre-formatted Excel sheet on the workstation desktop OR jot down patron IDs and  barcode number(s) on paper and leave the Circulation Desk Supervisor a note. You may then go ahead and de-sensitize the books and allow the patron to leave with the item.
  • When ILL books are returned, check them in just like Preus Library books and place them on the appropriate shelf in the pre-shelving area. Do NOT return them to the ILL Hold Shelf.
  • If someone asks to pick up an ILL during business hours and there are none available for them, check with the ILL staff in the back room to see if they have yet to bring books received that day out to the Hold shelf.
  • Some ILL materials are restricted to in-library-use-only, typically microfilm materials. There is a Hold area below the regular ILL Hold Shelf for such materials. These materials should be placed back in this area when they are returned unless the patron specifically says they are done with them and checks the box on the pink slip inserted in item. If the patron is done with them, the materials should be checked in off the patron’s account and  placed on the ILL shelf in the pre-shelving area for return shipment.
